DVD drive burning issues
« on: November 06, 2010, 09:57:16 AM »
Hey. I hope someone can help. I recently upgraded from vista to 7, after the upgrade I am having issues with my DVD drive.

Firstly I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545. I went to burn a cd via iTunes and it said that no cd burner or software was found. The drive does not show up in my computer or device manager. If I put an audio cd or DVD into the drive it will show up for a few seconds and then disappear again. I managed to access the properties and at first it said code 10, the device cannot start, but now it is saying code 45, it's not connected. But surely it wouldn't register a DVD briefly when I put one in? I have tried updating the firmware but this won't work, I'm really stuck, am usually fairly competent at this stuff but I can't find anything online that is any help. Any idiots guides to getting this fixed will be greatly appreciated. If you need more info let me know. Thanks

Can you do the following please
Download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Right Click on SystemLook.exe and choose to "Run As Administrator"
  • Copy the contents of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: [Select]
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Can you check out that link and follow along
I would assume trying Solution 3

If you don't want to do the steps manually, we can use some tools to remove files and registry entries
Your choice, but I would have to know if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system

Then click "Upload"

Sorry for the delay, it appears the first part of the script was not copied/pasted properly

Can you do the following
Right click Systemlook.exe and "run as Admin"

Enter the contents of blue into the blank field then click LOOK
Post back the contents of the log that opens

:reg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GearAspiWDM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GEARSecurity

DVD drive burning issues
« Reply #9 on: November 14, 2010, 12:38:05 PM »
Let's try the following, these are steps outlined by Apple
First, go to the following link
http://www.gearsoftware.com/downloads.php?dir=updates/windows/drivers/&file=Driver_Installer_x86_x64.exe

Download and save to your Desktop the latest version of Gear drivers
the link labelled
For 32-bit and 64-bit systems:
Don't run it yet, simply save it to your desktop for now

Next:
download the OTM.exe by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on OTM.exe and choose to "Run as Administrator"
  • Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GearAspiWDM]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
    "UpperFilters"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6D807884-7D21-11CF-801C-08002BE10318}]
    "UpperFilters"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{CE5939AE-EBDE-11D0-B181-0000F8753EC4}]
    "UpperFilters"=-
    [Reboot]

  • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the light yellow bar) and choose Paste.

  • Click the red Moveit! button.
The machine should be rebooted, on startup, allow OTM to run if prompted

You should see a log that those values and registry key were deleted
Right click again on OTM.exe and choose to "Run as Admin"
Copy the commands with file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

:Reg
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs]
"C:\\Windows\\system32\\GEARAspi.dll"=-
"C:\\Windows\\system32\\drivers\\GEARAspiWDM.sys"=-
:Files
C:\Windows\System32\GearAspi.dll
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\GearAspiWDM.sys
[Reboot]

Return to OTM.exe, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the light yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Click the red Moveit! button.
The machine should be rebooted, on startup, allow OTM to run if prompted
You should see a log that registry entries were removed and files were moved

The next step is to remove any Gear software that may be installed
Access Programs and Features in Control Panel
If you have both Itunes and Quicktime
First Uninstall Itunes, don't reboot after removal
Note: If you find anything related to iPod Updater, remove it next

Then Uninstall Quicktime, when Quicktime has been removed, reboot the computer again
Back in Windows
Install the Gear drivers you saved earlier to Desktop
Right click the installer and choose to "Run as Admin"

Then install the latest version of both Quicktime and Itunes from the following link
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Reboot after installation, see if everything is fine afterwards

Tried it.

it says please make sure the drive is connected, windows didnt detect an optical drive. it might be disconnected or unplugged (impossible as it registers a disc for a few seconds when you put one in the drive). check the drive connection or plug the drive in.

i press next.....

and then basically said it detected problems which it was able to fix, but verification shows the problem still exsists,

A CD,DVD,BD WAS NOT DETECTED - NOT FIXED
HARDWARE CHANGES MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN DETECTED - DETECTED!

i am pulling my hair out now!! i work as a dj and burning cd's is my livelyhood and am having to visit friends houses to use their drives and really dont want to fork out for a new one. was fine up until windows 7 installation!!.

i do appreciate the help.

In MyComputer, what drive letters do you see assigned?

What drive letter was your CD/DVD drive?

Can you do the following
Run this thru Systemlook.exe and post the results

Code: [Select]
:reg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In addition: Go to Device manager, can you post any error messages from DVD drive
Also, what is the exact model of DVD drive?

One last request
Download OTL.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close all windows and right click on OTL.exe and choose to "Run as Administrator"
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
