Zip Drive Causing Winxp To Hang At Boot Up
« on: April 11, 2003, 02:09:27 PM »
Has anyone seen this problem, I have a Zip 250 ATAPI connected to a Promise Ultra100 TX2 IDE PCI controller card, hard drives are on a different Promise Ultra100 TX2 IDE PCI (yes, I have 2 cards in the system) each has their own channel and a DVD-ROM drive on motherboard primary as master and CD-ROM as slave and on the motherboard secondary I have a CD-RW buy itself.  I know I could probably connect the ZIP as slave to the burner but I do alot of on the fly burning and I didn't want to take the chance of the Zip drive complicating anything.

Anyway, here is the problem, I can't boot in WinXP unless there is a disk in the drive when I boot up.  It's almost like it thinks it is a hard drive and it's waiting for it to spin up or something.  Anybody know of a fix for this keeping the current configuration?

Thanks...

Might check to see if there's a firmware update for that drive.  I've had problems with CD Burners on promise controllers, I would bet the problem is exactly what you think it is.  It sees the zip drive as a regular drive, and is trying to detect just what kind of drive it is (and it can't, without a zip disk in there).  If there's no fix for it, I'd either always leave a disk in, or move it to one of the motherboard ide controllers.  It would probably be ok with the DVD, as long as you don't plan on copying direct from the dvd drive to the zip drive much (and even if you do, I doubt the zip drive is fast enough for you to tell the difference).
