XP RETAIL install + OEM key = Problem
« on: August 29, 2002, 03:02:09 PM »
Hello,

Has anyone an idea of how to fix this in a non-destructive way? i.e. (re-install XP with the OEM CD media).

We used a retail version of XP to install the OS because we couldn\'t wait for the OEM cd\'s to arrive to finish the installation, no we have 3 PCs with XP and the other applications installed but can\'t use the license keys we bought because you can\'t use OEM keys to register XP if it was installed with a RETAIL media.

Is there some registry setting perhaps that we can change to make it think it was an OEM install?  Or some other such minor change.  The problem being they have sent the PCs to the far corners of the earth and will be difficult to send them back home.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

i don\'t know if this will work for you or not
but the best thing to do is go to www.boot.nu and make another xp cd editing the PID(product id) to a retail version

I know for sure it works with 2000. but not too sure about xp or xp service pack 1

Windows XP Product Key Modifier

This application automates the task of changing your Windows XP product key. Doing this manually is quite a nuisance, Simply enter your new valid XP product key (e.g. XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) into the field provided, and click to the \'Change Key\' button, download at:

Make sure your license allows it to be installed on more than one PC.  If so then it should give you no problems, if not then you would have to take it off the first PC before MS would let you put it on another.  If it doesn't activate, just call them and explain to them what happened.
