Burning Dvds With Regular Cdr Drive

I was told you can burn AVI, or MPEG files on a regular CDR drive and play them in a dvd player,
is this true?
I was told specifically mpeg.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

Alot of DVD players support VCD, which is basically a CD with MPEG video on it,  You can't just throw an mpg on the CD and burn, you have to burn it specifically as a VCD, Nero has an option to do this as I'm sure other burning progs do.
