What Was The Verdict In Regarding Dvd Install?
« on: April 23, 2003, 11:23:39 PM »
I was wondering what the final result was on that. I have seen it done but didnt actually do it.
I was wondering if i can put w1n2k on a bootable dvd and boot off it. Then of course install windows from
it.

ive havent tried ityet...and i cant http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />..i dont have a dvd burner. I was though going to put a bunch of OS's on a dvd and see how that worked out....via the help of a friends burner.

Zhit almost forgot...can you use the same boot sector if you JUST wanted a win2k bootable dvd??? Sector 20???
ive searched on google for all this but too many hits on general dvd stuff like installing a burner, using one, setting one up...blah blah

It should work the same as with a bootable cd.  I made a bootable dvd image of Mandrake using a standard boot floppy image and it worked fine.

Did you use DVD software to make the image/dvd ????

If someone wanted only a win2k bootable dvd could they
use just about any tool? such as cdimage.exe

i used cdimage to make a image bootable with sector20.bin .
isobuster reads it as a bootable CD and when i go to burn it
to virtual DVD drive in nero and discjuggler it doesnt pick up on that
the image is bootable. isobuster thinks it is just a really big cd
i think.

i couldnt imagine why it wouldnt work....but in order for me to burn
this out to a REAL dvd i have to go to BestBuy and use a floor model
which isnt fun so i want to semi-know it will work ok when burned
out. I guess the only real way to know is to burn it out.

Also is there such thing as a diskemu like loader that can load .iso's???
i would just load the image from there and see if it would work. I would still have to wonder how the REAL thing would work but atleast it would give
hope.

I still don't see why it wouldn't work.  Perhaps try to make the dvd bootable with nero?  You can use the same kind of instructions as with cdrwin (they changed it since the article so it should work) and try that.  Perhaps the other programs you're using don't know what to do with a dvd image?  Not sure.  All I can say is it worked for me, but I use linux.  That could have made a difference.

i dont think it has to do with what OS i would be using...but how the particular software interprets/reads
standard .iso's. Nero i wont touch on dvd...especially if i only get like 1 shot at it.

Funny thing is though what your saying is what i believe and MANY others have stated. But ive found just
a few pages on this and the illustrated examples show nero recongizing it as a bootable image.

I dont see why the iso standard whould be any different when it comes to media obviously...a bit is a bit
to desktop computers more or less so no matter what it reads from...if it is standard it should be treated
as such.

I know you CANT use the UDF system to make a bootable dvd (to my knowledge atleast...never seen that you could).

I dunno..it really dont matter i will of course try it out.

What's crazy is when you look for this subject only nero and discjuggler come back for windows examples..
but there is a TON of examples on linux...however they are using standards linux recongizes...of course ISO 9660 is one.

Im seriously probably the only person having this problem anyways. I just got to try it out.

Next step is to boot the .iso from dos with the linux kernel...but cant find a program that will boot it...all i find is the over obvious mount command for the image.

btw have you compiled your a linux kernel yet??? im wondering because i got the source code for a CL newsposter called ypost.exe...and the code will not compile with gpp or gcc. I keep getting a msg saying
there is a out of bounds exceptiong...and i dont see anything that would cause this like a array or what not.
Ive never compiled the kernel on linux succesfully either because i get very similar error messages.
