Using an OEM copy of w2k
« on: May 27, 2003, 01:12:25 AM »
Hi,

I bought a 'new' copy of Windows 2000 on Ebay - guaranteed brand new, with serial number, sealed in the packet and all.
And it was, except that it was an OEM issue for DELL computers.
Attempting to install it to upgrade Windows 98 returns a message \"this version is only for installation on a DELL computer\", then the installation aborts.
Any way around this??

First, I would file a complaint with the seller unless the auction did state somewhere that it was for dell pc's only.  You aren't supposed to use that win2k serial on a non-Dell PC (I'd bet it violates the license agreement).  If worse comes to worse, you might be able to get around the dell check, there are some posts here that went into that, dunno what the success rate was though.
