Reinstall of Windows XP
« on: June 06, 2003, 10:36:30 AM »
When you load the operating system from the boot disk you have the option of a clean insatall or a repair install.  I have a problem with a driver during the installation which causes the installation to go to a black screen with just the flashing cursor just before the Weldome screen should display.  I have been told it is a driver being loaded that is causing the problem and it does no good to try safe mode, vga mode or any other setting during the boot process.  I still end up with a black screen and glashing cursor before the Welcome screen should come up.  If I do a clean install to the same c:\windows directory, will I lose all my installed programs and data and have to reinstall everything or will it pickup that stuff in the new insallation?

Use this repair option. Your data will still be there.
Press any key to boot to CDROM, and the XP setup should start.
When prompted, press enter to install XP. It will find your previous install and then you select “Repair”. After that do not press any key to boot to CDROM no matter how many times the XP setup reboots the system.
If that doesn’t work, then it’s time for a clean install. For that, follow the above steps, but don’t use the repair option. Continue on and delete the C:windows partition and then create a new one. It will then format and install XP.
Good luck!
