changing HD with 2 winxp?
« on: January 15, 2004, 09:06:16 AM »
Hello Hello...
Greetings to all, it's the first time I post here... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' />
I've been working with winxp-pro, and things were just fine. The problem is that my HD isn't mine!!!  A friend lended it to me, so I could start working while building up my comp...   http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
Now I have a new HD, 3-partitioned, with lots of data in, and I wanted to re-install xp on an empty partition, what I did (i have a bad tendency to take risks...), and things are not so bad: my pc asks me wich winxp I want to boot to, and the old one works fine, while the new one works, but has some strange behaviour (re-booting, black screen while working...) wich may be due to the absence of proper drivers for the rest of my hardware... (?)  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />
Now, finally, I have to give back my old HD to my friend, but I don't know if I'll be able to boot from my new HD!!! I've read some posts about the MBR staying on 1st HD.... I wonder if I should change the BIOS settings Master/Slave (and the little pin-connectors behind my physical discs????), or just diconnect the old HD, or disconnect it and re-install xp so that it will create a new MBR...??? http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':o\' />

To summarise: I want to install xp on a HD that already has data and partitions on it, without having to format the whole! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
Even if it's a bit confused, I'd greatly thank any advice you could giv me...
