How does one change the serial number of Windows XP professional once it has been installed?

just delete the string "ProductId" in the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

then reboot your system, and windows will ask for a new key
