6 months back I built a new machine - Maxtor SATA on a Kv7 mobo...all went together ok...
over the next few months i increasingly experienced filing errors - files becoming orphaned and XP would prompt me to run chkdsk, or when i booted the machine, chkdsk would just run - this got more and more until finally last week, the machine was sat idle when it re-booted itself (another thing it had been doing) and didn't come back up. It would get to the XP splash screen and stay there.
No attempt to repair was succesful. I went to reinstall XP in the existing partition. The installation failed - it kept complaining it could copy the files from the cd.
So I formatted the partition. But then the XP install would blue screen at the point where it tells you you have something like 3 minutes to go!!! I tried this about 3 times.
I was just about to think it was game over for me and this disk (and all my data on the D partition) when I suddenly had the idea of formatting it FAT instead of NTFS.
It worked, I was able to load windows successfully and get at all my work, which i promptly began the mammoth task of backing up to cd...(I always do this after a 'game over' type scare! LOL!)
I hope to god i don's see the same problems recurring again, but I wouldn't be surprised - if anybody has seen similar, or knows a way to make sure this doesn't happen again, please shout up...
Thanks.
