Hey-hey,
I should start off by saying, this computer is four years old and been nothing but trouble for the past year and a half. First the thing's hard drive dies. Straight up, dies. I retrieve my files, format the drive, and start with a fresh install of XP. It dies again a few weeks later. I do the same thing. It does it again, a third time. A few friends kindly send me a new hard drive. I put it in, it doesn't work. I leave it alone for six months. I finally get nearby access to a WinXP computer and format the drive, then I put it back in. It has trouble booting because it won't detect the HD on the first try, but it works every time after I enter the BIOS setup screen and restart. Then it dies. Then I get it working again, still with the booting problems. There's our history together. Now, onto the actual problem:
This started a couple days ago: whenever I turn it on it doesn't recognize the speakers, and sometimes the mouse. Thankfully fiddling with the mouse's plug gets that working, but the speakers aren't so lucky. So I try to go into the Device Manager to figure out what's goofy, and it says "Unable to load the Device manager program file, devmgr.dll". Figuring that was corrupted I went to one of those online DLL warehouses and got a fresh copy of the DLL, but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas on what I can do here..?
