XP Pro Problems after Trojan
« on: December 17, 2004, 04:41:49 PM »
Hello.  Great site.  It has helped me a lot by reading similar problems other people have had and using those solution.  However...

I just got nailed by various backdoor trojans.  Norton found one, couldn't fix it, so I used a couple other programs like ewido, search and destroy and so on.  Various things were found and supposedly fixed.  I rebooted and problems started.  Biggest problem was that I was unable to start anything.  Almost every icon I clicked on I rec'd an error indicating rundll32.exe couldn't be found.

I used the Repair option in the XP Pro install CD and still had the same problems.  So, again, using the methods I read about in www.thetechguide/forum/index.php?showtopic=11540 I was able to cure most issues.

The two problems I have now are:
1.) I can't run Windows Update
2.) I can't look at the Event Viewer
3.) Some Icons don't start the associated programs

Automatic Windows update shows there are updates ready to be installed. When I click the icon in the sys stray it just goes away and never does anything.

When I try to look at the Application or System event viewer logs I get a popup that says - Unable to complete the operation on "Application".  Access is denied.

Lastly, some of my app icons present me with a dialog box that is titlted "Run As" and I have to uncheck the 'Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity' in order to get the program to run.  It's as if the security policy has changed(?).

BTW, this XP Pro box is a stand alone server.

Here is my HiJackThis log.  I hope you can help.
Thanks for this fantastic site
