gettting popups - thought was farmmext.exe
« on: January 22, 2005, 03:07:44 PM »
Hello all..I'm having some trouble still...I started getting these popups that weren't getting blocked by my AOL popblock toolbar in IE.
After some researching I learned I had farmmext and satmat on my computer. I searched and found this article here in the forum:
http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.ph...t=0&#entry20609
...and followed the basics outlined there.

I seem to have removed those two as well as some others, yet the popups continue...{surprise, surprise http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> } - so now I'm at a loss.

I updated both Spybot and Adaware before I went through the process - and got CleanUp! today and ran them all according to the post's instruction.

Here's my current HJT log

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Spybot's Tea Timer is a great feature but can get in the way of any fixes we try in your log
Open Spybot>>Click on Mode at the top
Advanced mode>>Yes to the prompt
TOOLS>>RESIDENT
Uncheck only >>>Resident Tea Timer
Allow the change and then exit Spybot

Restart your computer into SAFE MODE

Find and delete these files if they exist, look closely for them
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll <--file

Stay in safe mode
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe

O2 - BHO: ZServObj Class - {00000000-C1EC-0345-6EC2-4D0300000000} - C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode and post back with a Fresh hijackthis log

Can you also download and save to desktop
VX2 Finder
Open it up and click the "Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet"
Let if finish the scan>>won't take long
Make a log and post it back here

Don't enable Tea Timer yet
Your still not clean

Download and UNZIP to a folder Pocket Killbox

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Open Killbox.exe to run it.
Click on "Delete on Reboot", in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, enter

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\netdb.exe

and click on the button with the white cross in a red circle. You will get a question "File will be Deleted on Next Reboot, Process & Reboot now?", answer "Yes".

After your back in Windows ensure that this file is gone
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log

first...I can't thank you enough...this is so helpful...thank you thank you...

ok...that didn't go as I expected...(I still have Tea Timer off)

http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

ok..earlier I found this:
"C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll <--file"
in fact I also found a ZServ(2).dll which I also deleted.

But, I did not find this
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\netdc.exe <--this file"
I also searched for it while I was in safe mode (including system and hidden files) and did not find any occurance...

I also just searched again while not in safe mode and still was not found.

...yes, I was very careful http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> hehe

so...I'm guessing this fact has lead me to this alert after following the instructions for Killbox - after selecting to 'reboot now'...

"PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"

...and it never rebooted. I ran killbox again...same alert...so then I manually rebooted.

Seems as though that entry has not gone away http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> ... - although the popups seem to have! - at least so far.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Can you Download DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Default settings should work---C:\Windows\System32 directory
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long
Click the Compare button to start the next process.This will take a bit longer.

When it's done click the Make a log of what was found button and post it back here

Can you follow these instructions from either Trend Micros or Symantec's?
You will have to edit the registry
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc...U%2EAI&VSect=Sn
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...oor.nibu.e.html

It's best to create a Restore point before doing so
START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore>>Create a new restore point
Name it and click Create

It will ask you to modify your Hosts file
You can use this small tool to help you out
Download and UNZIP to a folder Hoster by Toadbee
When asked by Trend Micros to modify your hosts file
Simply open Hoster and click the "Restore Original Hosts"

If you can't access those links to Trend Micro's or Symantecs
Than run Hoster before hand and Restore original hosts
