The log looks better

You should set up extra protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free! or IE-SPYAD2.EXE Free!

Regular IE-Spyad for the individual user or IE-Spyad 2 for global protection(All users) on your computer
You only need one or the other

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Is Task Manager working?
If not
Download and SAVE this reg file to desktop
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits...taskmanager.reg

Double click on it and and Allow it to merge to the Registry

Restart your computer

If you have a legit version of Windows, you have no reason to be so far behind on Windows Updates

If your not ready to Install SP2
You should at minimum install Service Pack 1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/default.mspx

After Installation>>>Restart your computer when prompted and then go to Windows Update and get all Latest Critical updates

Excluding SP2 and Recommended updates
You should prepare your system for SP2, if you need a hand and you want to install it--Post back and let me know
But please install SP1a
OR, if you feel your ready to take the jump to SP2, let me know and I can give you a hand if you need it.....

OK, I installed SP1a... I would like to install SP2, but need some help.

Also, I have a small problem.  Remember in my first post I said that something took over the desktop and it says "WArning, your in danger..."  Well, it's still there.  I tried changing my desktop picture but it stays on top.  The picture changes, you can see it at the bottom, but the warning thing stays on top.  How can I get that off?

Also, overall... things are running a little bit slower.

Before, I was working on my moms account, for some reason, mine wasn't working.  Here is a new Hijack this log from my account... Are there a lot of problems on this one?  We are all set as administrator, so does it really matter whose account i"m on when I do this?

Ahhh, Ok, let's try some more cleanup on your machine

With this Account

Access your Add/Remove Programs and remove if found

NCase
180 Solutions
180 Search Assistant or similiar

Restart the computer if anything removed

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Process Manager
Kill this process if still running
C:\program files\zango\zango.exe

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\DARCI~1.HOM\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\DARCI~1.HOM\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\DARCI~1.HOM\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zango] c:\program files\zango\zango.exe

O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

O16 - DPF: {99410CDE-6F16-42ce-9D49-3807F78F0287} (ClientInstaller Class) - http://www.zango.com/GetZango/Download/zangoax.cab

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart the computer into safe mode
Find and delete this folder

c:\program files\zango <--this folder

Restart back to Normal mode
Sign in with the Account that has the Desktop view problem
I assume your Mom's account
I'm going to ask you to Edit the registry, alway a good idea to make a backup before hand
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore

Create a fresh restore point>>>Name it and click Create

Once that is done you can follow these directions by Trend Micros'

# Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
# In the left panel, expand(+) the following
+HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Internet Explorer
+Desktop
+Components
# Still in the left panel, locate and Right click on and delete the subkey:
0
# Close Registry Editor.

Set windows to show hidden files and folders

Using Windows Explorer and/or Search, locate and delete the following files:
Do a search for the bolded files
• C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html
• C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html
• C:\WINDOWS\SSICO.ICO
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

After that is done, Restart your computer
The desktop problems gone?

Can you also do a free Online Virus scan at RAV's---this is also a good step to do before installing SP2
I see you have tried one at Panda's but let's try one here too
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

When you access that link with Internet Explorer
click on the "To Continue without subsribing click here" link
It will load the activex and definition files

Ensure that all the top entries are checked
Autoclean--Inside Archives---Unpack Executables---Smart Scan

Then click the Scan my PC button
Let it completely finish scanning
Copy and Paste the results back here

Post back a Hijackthis log from Both accounts

Name one MOM's so I can identify it

P.S. You don't want to install SP2 until your system is absolutely clean from Spyware and viruses

OK, here we go.

First off, I could not find these files:
• C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html
• C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url

How do you get windows to show hidden files?  Is that why I couldn't find them.

Second, the desktop problem is on both of our accounts.  Mine if fixed... my mom's still has the black box.  My sister's account's desktop is fine.

Third, that antivirus to so flippin' long... here is it:

« Reply #24 on: January 21, 2005, 08:21:19 PM »
Sorry it took me so long to get back

The logs don't look too bad now, but I totally forgot about the DLLCompare log that has shown the possiblility of VX2.BetterInternet infedtion

From your Moms account
Try this again
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Using Windows Explorer and/or Search, locate and delete the following files:
Do a search for the bolded files
• C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html
• C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html
• C:\WINDOWS\SSICO.ICO
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

<current user> Moms account name

Restart the computer into Safe mode

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\20040810153436531.zip <--file
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\20040810153438437.zip-

C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppq175.tmp
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine\ppqC5.tmp

Some of the next ones may be the zipped folders  in Quarantine but look for and delete them if found
C:\Program Files\clearsearch
C:\Program Files\istsvc
C:\Program Files\common files\updater
WINDOWS/downloaded program files/ISTactivex.dll

Stay in safe mode and Open Windows CleanUp! and click on the Cleanup button
After it's done scanning for files
Restart back to Normal mode
Sign in with an account who has Adminstrative privileges

Let's look for VX2.BetterInternet infection that the DLLcompare log may have shown earlier

Download and save to desktop VX2 Finder
Double click to open it
"Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet"
Let it finish scanning>>won't take long
Make a log and post it back here

Post back a Hijackthis log from the account you ran VX2 Finder from

Hey, sorry it took so long to do this.  I was out of town for a few days.

Anyway...
The only files I found were:
Desktop/html
ssico
owner/favorites/!smart security.url
I searched for those files while I was logged in under my moms account

Here is the log for VX2 finder:
I did this while logged in under my account.

That's what I wanted to see
Just hold tight and I'll post a fix
Disconnect completely from the Internet
Run vx2finder.exe again
Press 'Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet'
Select all the files found
Press 'Delete These Files'

The program will delete all files but one that will be deleted on reboot
Allow program to reboot

When your back in windows, open VX2 finder again and press "Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet"
When it's done scanning
a. Press 'Guardian.reg'
b. Press 'User Agent'
c. Press 'Restore Policy'

on the right hand side and follow the prompts

Restart your computer again

Back in Windows
Again run VX2 and Click to find VX2.BetterInternet
When it's done scanning make a log and post it

Also post a fresh hijackthis log
Just post it from one Administrator account, thanks
Yours or your mom's

Is mom's desktop back to normal?

Make sure that you are set to show hidden files and folders
Print this out or save to a notepad file

Disconnect completely from the Internet
Open VX2 Finder and click to find vx2.betterinternet

If files found delete them

Restart your computer into SAFE MODE

Find these files and send them to the recycle bin
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wincore.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cidrules.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetadpt
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winhost32.exe

Also look for any others I mentioned in the earlier post and delete them if you haven't already

Restart back to Normal mode

Run VX2 finder again---click to find VX2
Make a log and post it along with a fresh hijackthis log

We should have this beat, I may not see your response until tomorrow
But do what you can

EDIT>>>Could you do one more thing for me please
Could you  download LSPfix.zip
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Unzip the contents and double click on LSP fix to run it
Let me know what you see in the KEEP side
also let me know what you see in the REMOVE side

I want to ensure your winsock settings haven't been hijacked, sorry for the delayed edit

also, when I sign into her account, something named Freedom security starts up

It's a program that looks like you guys purposely installed
Didn't you
Do you want it running on startup?

Did you pay for it?

Here's some more info on it
http://www.freedom.net/

I'm not sure if your using they're Anti-Virus software
But it's not wise running more than one AV on startup
Can cause conflicts
The same goes with Firewall's, you only need one running
Not recommended having more than one running

I'm just saying this because I also notice you have Symantec's Norton AV running
You will have to see what of each product is running on startup
You may be using the programs for different functions

To delete the kernels32.exe I did the following:

- Run Spyboot and delete all entries
- Run Startup Manager and delete Kernels32 Startup Files
- Run Evidence Eliminator ( all Backup Files will be deleted)
- Start system in save mode and delete Kernels 32. exe in Windows/  System

And here we go!

OK, I think it's been more then a week.  I have no idea.  Here is my new log.

3 problems...

1. The computer is really slow, sometimes it takes forever for a page to load and then half of the time it doesn't even work, it just says page can not be found.  If I restart the computer, it will load the page.

2. There is still this annoying messenger service that keeps popping up.  There are web sites at the bottom like, www.updatenow.net and [censored] like that.  Even if I am not active on the internet, they still come up. Maybe it's because I have a cable modem or something.  When I sit down at the computer after a day or two, I have to close out like 50 windows.

3. Norton keeps telling me that there is some like interference or something, try re installing the program.  How do I fix that?  You once said that if you havce two anti-virus programs, they can screw each other up.  Do I have to delete one?  Which one should I delete?

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Messenger

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Do the same thing for Alerter

I'm not familiar with Freedoms AV
Is it installed on the computer or are you just using the Popupblocker?
Check Freedoms options and see if you are running the AV from it

If so, try and disabling it from running on startup and Restart your computer

As far a which AV to keep, you will first have to find out if your using Freedoms AV software
Not that you have to uninstall one or the other but having both running on startup and in the background can cause conflicts
For troubleshooting purposes I would disable Freedoms protection all together
Just temporarily to see if that helps

Could you run another scan with VX2 finder and post the log please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

You will have a better chance of tracking it down than I  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Can you access it from START>>ALL PROGRAMS?
Can you log into your Mom's account and take a look

Like I said, I'm not sure if your using the AV from Freedom
But here's a quote from Freedoms site

Quote
Is it advantageous to have more than one anti-virus program installed on the same computer at the same time?

No. You will not gain any additional protection. Furthermore, the presence of two different anti-virus programs on the same computer can sometimes cause conflicts that could jeopardize the protective capabilities of the software. It is also not necessary to have multiple copies of the same program installed on one computer. The use of two different anti-virus programs may also cause significant slowdowns.

You will have to find out on your end if your using the AV from Freedom's
They have package deals, I don't see the AV running in the Services but I'm not familiar with the program

EDIT>>As I mentioned you may just be using the Popup blocker, I'm not sure

This may help
Login with your Mom's account
Do you see an Icon by the clock that is related to Freedom
Try opening up the programs features
Let me know what features are built into it
It doesn't appear you have them all running, but take a look

Popup Blocker
Firewall
AV
