Need help to remove spyware!!!
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:12:19 AM »
I am so frustrated with the non-stop popup IE windows.  I have tried to scan my PC with Spyware doctor v3.03410, spyware bouncer v1.6, Ad-aware SE personal, stinger, bazooka, online Trend Micro....  I found a long list spywares(and trojan ocassionally) everytime I performed the scanning, and the same spywares will still appear again and again after cleaning.  I have totally run out of idea and really need help to solve this annoying problem.

Below is my HijackThis log file :

Need help to remove spyware!!!
« Reply #1 on: November 13, 2005, 02:20:07 PM »
let's do this in steps to get you clean

Can you first do the following

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = E:\WINDOWS\System32\blank.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [lsass64BiT.exe] lsass64BiT.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Datalog Application] msdata.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Datalog Application] msdata.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer
Back in windows
Find and delete these files if found
Look in your J or E drive
WINDOWS\System32\msdata.exe <-this file
WINDOWS\System32\lsass64BiT.exe <-file

Your way behind on Windows updates, this will keep getting you reinfected if you don't do some updates
Don't install Service pack 2 yet, the install will probably go bad
But use the link to install Service pack 1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...1/expresso.mspx
Reboot when required

Come back here and post a me a couple logs
Post a new hijackthis log
and
Download L2mfix from here

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

I was able to follow the steps as instructed except on the window service pack update which prompted me error msg "..atapi.sys is already open or in used".  I have already closed all the applications as well as rebooting the PC but the problem did not go away.

ANyway, here is the hijackthis log and L2MFIX log after fixing those entries as your advise.

Need help to remove spyware!!!
« Reply #3 on: November 14, 2005, 01:02:25 PM »
Let's see if we can do some cleanup and then concentrate on the Windows update problem

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from HERE
Click on the Free trial link

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Please print the rest of these instructions or copy and paste them too notepad for reference

Make sure you are disconnected from the internet.

In SpySweeper
Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives
Ensure that J and E are checked
. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

When prompted, allow Spy Sweeper to restart your computer

Back in Windows
Stay disconnected from the Net

Close any open programs running in the background, this step requires another reboot
Run L2MFix again with these instructions

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log
Post the contents of this log back here

If the L2MFix doesn't run after the restart, then go into the L2M fix folder and double click on second.bat to run it.

Additionally,
Copy and paste the SpySweeper log together with a fresh hijackthis log into this thread.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Need help to remove spyware!!!
« Reply #4 on: November 15, 2005, 09:57:06 AM »
I guess I have already get rid of the annoying spyware..  I am not sure though as normally the popup will appear in less than a minute time but now I have already online for about 10 mins and still no pop up appears.

There was something different on the l2mfix part as following through your clean up instruction.  After "run fix" and reboot, L2mfix did continue to run for a while and upon completion, all the desktop icons did not turn up and there was no notepad open with a log as well.  End up I have to press the hard reset button to restart windows and I run the second.bat and the exact same thing happen again.  Anyway, I checked back the L2mfix directory and found a file name log.txt.  It should be the file that you mentioned.

So, do I still need to update the window service pack 1a?

OK, the following are all the logs that you request.

Your log looks good
Try and install SP2 if you can???

Beforehand, please make a new restore point
Go to START>>Programs>>accessories>>system tools>>system restore
Click Create a restore point
Name it and click Create

P.S. Try disabling your download manager beforehand, they don't play good with Windows updates
