spurious e-mail messages sent out
« on: March 10, 2005, 07:51:47 PM »
My e-mails get sent out to spurious addresses not in my distribution list. I get replies back from people I do not know, and the replies also contain viruses. I am including the log file from the hijackthis scan here. Please advice how to clean this up.

A sample e-mail received is:

The sample file you sent contains a new virus version of mydoom.j.
Please clean your system with the attached signature.

Sincerly,
Robert Ferrew

I also seem to have spyware/adware that is slowing down my machine. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Arvind

I'm curious if Stinger from McAfee's will pick up on anything
Can you download and save to deskto
The STINGER
Don't run it yet

Next:
Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, prefetch folder, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Don't run it yet

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
I'm including entries too red.clientapps>>Related to Red Sheriff spyware

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...//www.yahoo.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://ca.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer into Safe mode, you can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is booting

Open Windows CleanUp>>START>>All programs>>Cleanup
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files
When it's done>>Don't Log off or Restart your computer yet

Instead, run Stinger by McAfee's
Let it scan your Hard drive and fix what it finds
Let me know if it finds anything

Restart back to Normal mode
Access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content
