Mouseutils cleanup
« on: May 14, 2005, 12:22:56 PM »
Hi all. I was hoping you could help me with a problem I've been having. Somebody accepted a file on MSN Messenger and infected my computer with the virus mouseutils.exe (and lbs.exe I believe). I found this forum through  almighty Google and found a previous thread about it. I followed the direction and cleaned the virus off my computer.

Two problems still remain however. Number 1 is that my Antivirus Real-Time  Protection Scanning still won't enable. I am running Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition.

Number 2 is that I used the Microworld Antivirus Scan that was suggested and this is what came up. How do I clear these off my computer?

Microworld AV Scan Results:

File C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\avdisk.dll infected by "Trojan.Win32.Agent.cs" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\avdisk.dll infected by "Trojan.Win32.Agent.cs" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File System Found infected by "Alexa Spyware/Adware" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.
File C:\WINDOWS\System32\awvtt.dll infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.d" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

And if it is needed, my current HijackThis! log.

Make sure the System Restore feature is ENABLED before we begin

Download the FxVundoB.exe file from: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxVundoB.exe.
Save it to your Desktop as we will need it in a bit

# Close all the running programs.
#Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
# If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, disconnect the computer from the network and the Internet.

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, after the single post beep, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

It important you are in safe mode before running the tool.

# Double-click the FxVundoB.exe file to start the removal tool.
# Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.
# Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.
# Restart the computer back to Normal
# If you are on a network or if you have a full-time connection to the Internet, reconnect the computer to the network or to the Internet connection.

Run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log

One file identified by Mwav should be gone
But could you make sure this one is gone

C:\WINDOWS\System32\awvtt.dll <-file

Post back and let me know how things are running

Note: besides the System Tray icon for Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition running on your computer
I don't see the actual AV running still

You may have to uninstall and reinstall the software if you can
or is it running properly now?

awvtt.dll is still on my computer. I have View Hidden File Types and View Operating System files enable. Should I reboot in safe mode and manually delete it?

And my AV is still not enabling realtime protection scanning but it does system scan if I open it and start it.

Yup, I would try safe mode to rid you of that file

While in safe mode, before you reboot back to Normal mode

Go to START>>RUN>>Type in msconfig
Hit OK

Ensure that everything is enabled under the Startup tab
Under the General tab it should be selected as Normal Startup
OK it and allow the computer too Restart back to Normal mode

It's not a good idea to not have Realtime protection on your computer

Got rid of the file. Ran a Microworld scan. Only thing that came up was this:

File System Found infected by "Alexa Spyware/Adware" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

I'll be running Spybot and Adaware to fully clean out that pesky Alexa and then I will run another Microworld scan to see if it worked.

My realtime protection is still off. I assume that I will have to re-install Symantec, correct?

And my resulting HijackThis! log after getting rid of that file is:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

I wouldn't worry too much about Alexa
Of course if you update too Service Pack 2 you won't probably see it anymore

Here's some more info
http://www.imilly.com/alexa.htm

I would do the following first
If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.3 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

If you want the steps I take before installing SP2, let me know

I followed all instructions and installed those programs you suggested. I also reinstalled Symantec and have Realtime protection finally enabled again. I am not upgrading to SP2 because of all the hassle and the problems that some face. My firewall does a great job as it is and I use Mozilla as my primary browser.

I would like to thank you for all the help you've given me, guestolo. It's apparent that you sacrifice a lot of free time to help other people on this board. Everytime I've come here to check for an update, the entire page is full with posts of you helping others. It's really nice to see how helpful some people are. I am greatly indebted to you. Thank you again.

Thanks for posting back
A bad install of SP2 could be because of the existance of Malware on your computer

Microsoft recommends removing all Virus, trojan, spyware on the computer before the Install
On top of that ensure that all drivers and third party software is updated

I'll lock this topic as your problems appear resolved, if you need it reopened
PM myself or the site Admin and supply a link to this thread

Take care  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
