Help needed with a register key in XP
« on: March 31, 2005, 12:21:25 AM »
Hi everybody

I have a tricky problem, I hope you can help me.

I attempted to install a replacement for windows explorer in XP,
everything worked perfect , until I discovered that I can't use any more Right-Click -> Open/Explore with my menu folders.
Everything the rest works well, also I can use Right-Click->Open in any other place: in My PC, in any folder, in the "START" button (so open the main folder of the menu), etc.

to try to explain the problem the best that I can:
- Click in Start menu
- Right Click in Accesories
- Open  (or Explore)
** nothing happens

I already reverted all the changes that I made, but the problem persist.
I'm quite sure that is a problem with a key in the register, but I can't find it!  :-(

I already revised  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell  and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell and all his subfolders,  they are
exactly the same compared with another WinXP instalation without this
problem.

Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

I'm not sure if this will help
Do you see either of these entries in the registry?

 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoViewContextMenu
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoViewContextMenu

Hi guestolo!

Thanks for your suggestion.

I already checked both keys that you indicate, ther is not a
"NoViewContextMenu" value in the machine with troubles neither in the machine for reference (the one that works fine).  :-(

Any other suggestion, please?

replacement for windows explorer in XP

Is it some sofware you tried to install for replacement of Windows Explorer?

Can you explain that, and are both machines running the same Service Pack

Ok, let me explain

My intention is to use a 3th party program to navigate in the folders,  copy and move files, etc.. So, in File Types, I defined a new option "Open with Explorer2" with the path of the new program and I established it as default. I do this both in "Folder" and in "Folder of files" (my Win is in spanish, "Carpeta" and "Carpeta de archivos"). Also I created HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\open\command   with c:\Explorer2\Explorer2 "%1" as default value.

This way, when I opened a folder, a window of Explorer2 was showed  instead of normal explorer of Windows.

When I discovered the trouble I erased that new options and I reestablished their exactly original values.  But something was bad.

Now my windows is "Almost" fine,  if I click in a folder then a explorer's window is opened, also if I use "right-click -> Open" all works well... EXCEPT if I try it in a menu folder. In a menu folder nothing happens, simply ignore Open, Open all users, Explore and Explore all users.

The only way is using Right-click -> Open in the Start button and then navigate starting from there... but I have many menus and sub-menus so this is not the best option to work.

The other machine that I mention is just another computer with WinXP in which I never tried to install Explorer2, and his menus works fine,  then I am using it to compare registry values and to try to find the problem.

It seems like something is still interfering with your right click

You can try this small download and disable any right click context menus that are non microsoft and see if it's any help
May be able to help you track down if one is interfering
I remember I use to be able to just Right click on an item in ShellEX and disable it and by trial and error see if any are part of the problem

Read the documention
