Hey! I need help. This Spysheriff thing pops up, and well, you know the story. I've checked out some other forums and done what they've said, however I'm running into some issues. As it turns out, I had absolutely NO firewall or spyware protection (I'm borrowing this computer from grandma....she's gonna love me for this.) Here are my problems...I keep getting reinfected after I clean this thing up bc it won't let me run any updates from the Microsoft site, and it won't allow me to download Ad-aware or SPYBOT..Bastards! I was able to download Hijack This. So, plz get back to me and tell me what to do! Thanx! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

the reason you can't get to any updates is in your host file, for example if it shows 127.0.0.1 www.symsntec.com it will not find symantec because it is only going to search your computer.below is what a blank file should resemble

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
# This MVPS HOSTS file is a free download from:           #
# http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/                        #
#                                                         #
# Notes: the browser does not read this "#" symbol        #
# You can create your own notes, after the # symbol       #
# This *must* be the first line: 127.0.0.1     localhost  #
# ********************************************************#
# ------------------Updated: 06-06-04---------------------#
# ********************************************************#
# Entries marked with Parasite or Trojan comments should  #
# be placed in the Internet Explorer Restricted Zone.     #
# http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm              #
#                                                         #
# Entries with other comments are searchable via Google.  #
#                                                         #
# Disclaimer: this file is free to use, however it is NOT #
# permitted to post on any other site without permission. #
# [Misc Add-ons][A - Z]

if all you see is 127.0.0.1 (some web site insert windows, trend ect.)
over and over you need to fix just copy the above blank file  and paste over the current text  save and you shoul be able to get out. you may also have to look at your lmhost also it will have similar blank.

I hope this helps you get out to perform your updates
