itallnowdone.com window opening on it's own
« on: March 30, 2005, 04:26:39 PM »
I'm having a problem where an Internet explorer window open on my PC on it's own.  It's a full-screen window that is completely blank (white).

In addition, I have, and am having trouble removing TROJ_SMALL.UP.
I've tried the Semantic removal instructions, but I've never been able to find the running operations that they suggest closing as part of the instructions.

I'm running Trend Micro PC-cillin with the latest update patches (auto updates pretty much daily) which continues to detect and quarantine a file called prvdi.exe which I'll delete from the quarantine folder as soon as it's detected.

Here is a hijackthis log:

Can you do the following for me please
Follow all the steps
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

===Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies,prefetch folder, recylebin
Windows Cleanup
Install for now, don't run a scan yet

===Download and UNZIP to desktop
HSFIX.zip
HSFix directory will be created
We'll need this later

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE <<This is important

Find and delete this file or folder, if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\prvdi.exe <-file

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer <-folder

Stay in safe mode
Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>All programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
DON'T log off or restart yet

Instead
===Navigate to the HSFix directory>>Open the folder, ensure you unzipped this
 and double-click on HSFix.bat.
* It will produce a log file, located here: C:\hslog.txt
Restart back to Normal mode

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log and the contents of C:\hslog.txt

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Thanks much for your help!

First, I took another look at my virus scan logs.  As it turns out, I've had a mix of both TROJ_SMALL.UP and TROJ_SMALL.SM over the course of the last week or so.  In each case, PC-cillin has detected and quarantined the file, and I've subsequently deleated it through PC-cillin.

Now, on to your instructions:

---------------
Find and delete this file or folder, if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\prvdi.exe <-file

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer <-folder
---------------
Neither of these were present.  However, prvdi.exe is the name of the file that has been detected and deleated by PC-cillin for TROJ_SMALL.UP.  By recollection, the file name associated with TROJ_SMALL.SM was access.exe.

Here is a fresh hijackthis log:

Just a quick bump to see if you have any comments on the new log.

However, I've not had a problem with wither the virus or the explorer window poppint up since performing you last reccomended steps, so it seems like that did the trick.

Thanks

Looks good

If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
IE-Spyad is compatible with XP Service Pack 2 as well
