Windows Explorer is CRASHING!!!

Hi everyone,

I’ve posted this problem to the Microsoft newsgroups
and the Ziff-Davis forums (PC Magazine), and haven’t gotten
any resolution to it - so I thought I’d try this group.

My latest problem is with Windows explorer.

Whenever I pull it up, it crashes about 60% of the time.

I have AVG anti-virus, Kerio personal firewall, and AD-Aware
installed on the system - along with Registry Mechanic, Avast,
and PCBugDoctor. Disk scans have been performed - CHKDSK (/f /r)
 - everything checks out OK.

My error message:

Program Error
-------------------

explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

Once System Explorer crashes, the icons on my desktop
disappear briefly, but them reappear - and there doesn’t
seem to be any problems after that - there doesn’t seem to be
any after-effects.

After booting with msconfig and selective startup
(with Process System.ini file and loading system services),
my problem with Windows Explorer crashing still persists.
From that I think that I can conclude that the problem isn’t
related to any apps being loaded, but to the Windows 2000
operating system itself - or a driver of some sort.

This started happening after the most recent update
from Microsoft - but I don’t know if I can draw any
conclusions from that.

I have my boot log, my history of updates (from Microsoft),
and file extensions. If anyone wants it, I can email it
 - those files are a bit large - so I would prefer not
to post it here.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be?

I’m going to give this 2 or 3 more days. If I can’t resolve it by
then, or there isn’t some sort of progress, I’ll wipe the hard drive
and reinstall everything. I’d hate to do that, but I’m running out
of options.
