XP removed w2k/98 dualboot
« on: September 08, 2001, 02:45:42 PM »
Recently I installed win XP, and I really like it BUT

I used to have a w2k /w98 dualboot (that w2k automatically made on install).

WinXP reconfigured this dualboot-menu so now i see only winXP and win98 ??

Offcourse win2k and winXP are on different partitions (different disks actually)

I tried to force a bootmenu-entry calling the partition that houses w2k, but just before jumping into GUI it crashes claiming it needs a \"something.hal\"-file

any clues og workarounds ?

I would think that booting up with the W2K CD and repairing your W2K installation might help.  If not, try manually changing the boot.ini.  Are you familar with how that works??

brew me a cup. we\'re here for the long haul
if at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0

That did it!! (fiddling with boot.ini):

The thing is that win2000 installs in /WINNT   and winXP installs in /WINDOWS

so changing the win2k line in boot.ini from /Windows to /WINNT did it

Do you know of any ressource considering the syntax and options in boot.ini ?

thanks for your help

I thougt, i might post the boot.ini - addition that brougt my w2k back to life:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)WINNT=\"win2000\"

The parameter partition(3) might differ according to where your w2k is located.

The easyest way to edit boot.ini is (from winXP) to press START, rightclick \"my computer\", properties, Advanced, Startup and recovery, Settings, Edit

good luck.

Also in WinXP, you can click on Start, Run, and type msconfig.  It lets you edit your boot.ini file, as well as make a lot of other quick changes to your system.
