windows 2000 retail to OEM question...
« on: April 19, 2005, 05:47:32 PM »
HI,
I saw a solution for making XP retail to accept OEM key at:
http://www.thetechguide.com/howto/setuppini.html

Will something similar work for Windows 2000? If yes,
any details will help!

Thanks,
RA

Greetings, I came across that same arcticle on Google looking for the same info as the guy above. Here's why: I bought a used PC at Goodwill (an Athlon 1.1G) and it has a W2K Pro OEM sticker on the case but the harddrive had been wiped; and no media was included.

I do, however, have a full retail copy of W2K running on another machine and had tried to use that media w/ the used machine's key to install. No go. Would the numbers in the setupp.ini be the same as XP? Here's my retail copy's file info:

[Pid]
ExtraData=6E797875766D79686E691614846D8A
Pid=51873000

The media has been ripped to this machine's harddrive and I even slipstreamed in SP4. Now I'm tempted to just change the "000" to "OEM" and burn it to a CDRW to see if it'll accept the key.
