CoolWWWSearch.OleHelp Victim

I new to this forum, and I found it by googling for info on CoolWWWSearch. I noticed that a lot of people posting about this hi-jacking thing, and I have my own story to tell >.<

Yesterday I noticed that when I rebooted my PC a new program would pop-up on startup titled "AcidBot". (Googling for that produces nothing). Anyway, this AcidBot looked like IRC client that connected to EFnet. The strange thing that it would not join any channel, just idle afterwards.

My cleaning attempts, at first, were fruitless. As I couldn't find from where it was being launch from. I run Ad-ware SE Personal 1.05 and Symantec AntiVirus 9.0 with little results. I even scanned my system for rootkits >.< That revieled nothing too.

Atlast, devastated I was told to use SpyBot - Search & Destroy 1.3

And it identified file /windows/system/svchost.exe as CoolWWWSearch.OleHelp, in addition that file was launching from registery under "run".
(I used SpyBot to clean the file. And that stopped AcidBot from appearing ever again.. in addition my system workds fine and the real svchost.exe loads as it should.)

I am wondering where it came from. More importantly, if I have managed to remove it completely and/or if there are any other malware on my system.

I am including my HijackThis log file. Hope it will help you.  I haven't run CWShredder yet, since I not sure if I need to.

Oh, btw, my system is Sony Vaio VGC-RA820G (http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=VGCRA820G), so there are a lot of Sony system things. =|

You may want to run CWShredder just in case
you can get the latest version from my signature below
Save to desktop and click the FIX button
If anything is fixed
Make sure to Restart the computer

Also, before running CWShredder
I would

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Although that file is related to Realtek
Here's some info about it

Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Monitor.  Sypware  file used surreptitiously monitor one's actions. It is not a sinister one like remote control programs but it is being used by Realtek to gather data about customers

When I ran CWShredder, it found and deleted VX2.Look2Me. And I have fixed ALCMTR.EXE using Hijackthis.

Are you having trouble with the program?
The file name associated to that service is usually called mysqld-nt.exe
Can you try the following and see if that service is needed running
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- MySQL <how many entries do you see with this name?

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

That is my mySQL Server 4.1 (www.mysql.com)
I do PHP development on this machine, and I need it mySQL database.

I ran services.msc. And there is only one service entry with  MySQL name. Double Clicking on that entry gives me the Property diaglog with the following information about the service:

Path To Executable is set at:
"C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\bin\mysqld-nt" --defaults-file="C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 4.1\my.ini" MySQL

Could it be possible that HijackThis simply didn't read the string correctly from my registry?

That's a good possiblility Vexy
I would leave it alone, that's why I wanted to do this manually instead of fixing it with Hijackthis
If we fix that entry with Hijackthis, it may not only stop the service but disable it all together

Can you do the following please
Just for a double check
Could you Download GetServices.zip
Unzip it to a folder
Double click on the Getservice.bat file to run it. This will create and open a text file named getservice.txt in the same folder.
getservice.txt will list all active Services

Post the getservices.txt

Last question: The two tools you posted seems to be targeted for IE and Firefox. However, I am an Opera person, and I always use Opera (www.opera.com), currently I am on Opera 8. Do I still need those tools, even if I never touch/use IE (except to go to windows update website) or Firefox?

But since Opera wouldn't use the same rendering engine as Internet Explorer, as a few  of the other browsers out there do
