msdirectx.sys and spybot.worm
« on: June 05, 2005, 11:15:03 AM »
OK.. so I'm tempted to just reformat my comp and put a fresh windows install on because this virus sucks...

But I've decided to ask for some help on this just incase my computer can be saved!

I'm not able to run hijack this in normal mode or Msconfig and regedit. But I was able to copy msconfig and rename it to access it that way. So I got into safe mode and did a hijack this scan and I'll post the log below, I also have run several of the virus scan programs listed in the first sticky of this forum, I've cleared up a lot of the viruses that were on here but a few persistant ones remain.

Here's the viruses found in the latest scan I've done from Symantec's website.

C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\msdirectx.sys is infected with Hacktool.Rootkit
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TFTP3524 is infected with W32.Spybot.Worm <--(this is a zero byte file that can be easily deleted but they keep coming back)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msconfig32.exe is infected with W32.Spybot.Worm
C:\FOUND.002\FILE0014.CHK is infected with Adware.IGetNet
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CMEII\GIoclClient.dll is infected with Adware.Gator
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CMEII\GIocl.dll is infected with Adware.Gator
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CMEII\CMESys.exe is infected with Adware.Gator

and here's my hijackthis log:

Also... I haven't had virus protection on this computer for awhile.. and I've got norton to install now, but it won't properly install because of the virus problems I'm guessing. I'd really appreciate any help on this, Let me know if I should just install a fresh copy of windows, and any suggestions on virus protection I should be using. Thanks!

Thanks for your patience, can I have you do the following please

Download:  Registry Search Tool from this link
http://billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip and double-click "RegSrch.vbs"
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a ".vbs" file, allow the script to run

In the open field copy and paste the below in bold then hit OK

msdirectx

Wait for the results and post them back here

Do the same for this one too
msconfig32.exe

Could you also
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Put a check in "List all minor sections (full)"
and "List empty sections (Complete)
Then
Click the Generate startup list and post the whole list here

And
Download and UNZIP to desktop Find.zip
Double click on Find.bat and post the contents back here

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Thanks for the help, I kept getting lost in the many pages of people who seem to be having some of the same problems.  Anyway, the first registry search tool didn't find any entries for both searches..

Here's the Startup list from hijack this:

Hmmm, can you please ensure you downloaded and UNZIPPED that registry tool from
that link I gave you

It should of definitely shown results for msconfig32.exe as I can see an entry the .bat file you posted
Please run the tool again
First run

msdirectx

WAIT for the results and post them back here

Do the same for this one too
msconfig32.exe

Also, you must post a full startup list from Hijackthis
Here's the instructions again
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Put a check in "List all minor sections (full)"
and "List empty sections (Complete)
Then
Click the Generate startup list and post the whole list here
To copy the Whole list select EDIT>>Select All
Right click and choose Copy

i found two computers in the last 2 weksa, different networks, infected with Hacktool.rootkit...the culprit was a file under C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 called 'setup32.exe'. The file cannot be seen/detected unless you go to
TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS -> VIEW
and 'Show hidden files and folders' is checked and 'Hide protected operating system files' is unchecked.

Also check your Task Manager for the file, kill the process, then delete it manually from the SYSTEM32 folder. This should take care of it.
