read memory problems in XP!

Everytime I try to open windows media player version 8, the program opens up REAL fast then closes almost instantaneously, then I get the message that "an internal application error has occured". During this message, I can still hear mp3s and other files playing, but I can't see the program. After I click ok, I get another box that says: (The instruction at "0x591c2522" referenced memory at "0x595c2a4c". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program). I also get another memory message if I try to open Reason 2.5 on my computer. It says: (Read Problem The operation could not be completed because of a read problem.). What "read problem" are they talking about? What is trying to read that it can't read? Some other similar problems that I have...When I open cool edit pro 2.0, the program opens and closes instantaneously. The find feature (including using Ctrl+F in text editors) and the Help and Support Center do not work AT ALL, not even a flicker.  I'm scared to attempt a clean install because I have over 2 GB's of personal files like my music applications, and I don't want to risk reinstalling Windows then finding out my installers have errors cause I burned the cd wrong. What can I do? Microsoft NEVER helps you unless you know how to fix the problem yourself and you want to buy something from them. Should I get one of those floppy disks with the OS info on it or get Norton disk doctor or what?
MY SPECS:
2.4 Ghz
224 Mb Ram
Virtual Memory:800 Mb
Win XP professional
40 gb hard drive, 29.3 Gb free
I hope this helps^
Please help me out here.. I can't make or listen my music!

I had the same problem. I went to the website and downloaded the latest version of WMP. It only got rid of the "
The instruction at "0x591c2522" referenced memory at "0x595c2a4c". The memory could not be "read". click on ok to terminate the program" part, not the Internal Application error. I then went to this (http://www.the-it-mercenary.com/forums/Help/posts/3888.html) site and followed the steps outlined by John, and now my WMP works fine.

When I had reason installed I tryed to install a NOCD patch,
i think it was:
Reason 2,5 NO-CD Crack
or
Reason 2.5  CRACK  by CooleR_fixed

thats where my problem started, i have no problems with other programs but when i start up reason i always get
Read Problem The Operation could not be completed because of a read problem
and i also get a License Notice (or smthng like that)

i guess (in the case of reason) i downloaded a patch made by proppelerhead them [censored]in' selves
