Restore cd HELP!?
« on: November 14, 2001, 12:28:56 PM »
I just built my own pc, its all put togther but I don\'t have a OS. I have a restore cd for an old compaq and a new sony vaio, when I start the pc it reads the cd and goes into the restore cd option menue, I choose full restore and then it says \" this is not a vaio pc\" or \" this is not a compaq pc\" what can I do to load the OS off the restore cd\'s? is there any way to hack the cd? I was thinking maybee the cd looks for a certin file that lets it know its the right computer if so can I find that file and then burn it all togther on a cd?? If anyone can help I would appreciate it thankx                   verbal_thretEmail Removed

This will take some work and it might not be worth your time. I did this with a restore Win98 CD from E-machines so I know it will work. Look in the root dir. of the CD for an image file 1.44MB in size. The name might be OSBOOT.IMG. Open this file and extract the autoexec.bat file from it. Open this file in notepad and find and delete any line that says \"go to system error\".

Now is the tough part. You\'ll need to made a new image file that has the updated autoexec.bat in it. With that file and all the other files and folders from the CD you\'ll have to make a bootable .iso file and then burn it.

on the compact CD\'s windows isnt actually installed, It\'s a passworded zip file with all the files ready for use, there are multiple files on the cd, each one repesenting a major dir.

so if you are able to crack the first problem you will still have the problem of the OS having a setup for the original pc it came with.

I have no idea what you are talking about. There are no .zip files on the restore CD refered to above.

Just get a copy of an OEM CD, and use the key you got to install it.  As long as you\'re installing it on the same PC it came with, it should be 100% legal.  If it\'s on a different PC but you\'re not using that license for the original PC, then the licensing gets tricky.  I won\'t get into that.

Or you could just wait for someone to upload/mail an image of what you want, much easier.
