Spyware and Computer lags, sometimes freezes
« Reply #1 on: March 01, 2006, 09:25:22 PM »
Let's see what we can clean and uncover

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.bat
Make sure you use the .bat extension
Save this file on the desktop, we'll need it later

Code: [Select]
sc stop "Windows Overlay Components"
sc delete "Windows Overlay Components"
attrib -s -h -r C:\WINDOWS\hlwkala.exe
del C:\WINDOWS\hlwkala.exe

If you don't have Spybot 1.4 or if you have an older version uninstall it
Then
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete, close it as we will need it later

==Download and Install
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

Please  save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaul...rch/search.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O18 - Filter: text/html - {6793D547-38DD-4325-B35A-F1817EDFA567} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Double click on fix.bat
A window will open and close, this is normal

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

Open Spybot 1.4
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

Reboot back to Normal mode

Your way behind on Windows updates, you must patch your system or you will  be in more trouble in the future
Access the following link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...1/expresso.mspx
Download and install your version of SP1a for Windows
When it's done, reboot your computer
In Internet Explore>>Go to TOOLS>>Windows Updates
Revisit and install all other HIGH PRIORITY updates except for SP2
Let's make sure your computer is running good before you install Service pack 2

Post back a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running
Are you running both Norton's firewall and Zone alarm?

Thanks for your response. Anyway, while awaiting for you to respond back, I went through various threads and mostly, I have noticed you recommending updates, which I did(the high priority  ones). When I restarted my pc  and went back to updates, it prompted me to install sp2 - which again I did. Then, I saw your response that I should do SP1a first. Oopps, sorry for my impatience. But I did eevrything else you told me as as above.  And here's my latest:

What do you think?

Spyware and Computer lags, sometimes freezes

Now that you have SP2 installed, I'm glad you didn't wait to install it

*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool[/url]
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Keep up to date on Windows updates
This is one of the most important steps in keeping your system secure
If you don't set to Autoupdate, make sure to visit Windows updates on a regular basis and keep up to date on High Priority updates

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background

*Check for updates with your anti-spyware programs and run a scan on a regular basis
In addition, Open Spybot 1.4
Click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Please immunize after every update

A firewall is very important protection
You didn't answer this question
Quote
Are you running both Norton's firewall and Zone alarm?
Although a software firewall is important, it's not wise to run more than one, this includes the one built into
SP2 which is enabled by default
ZoneAlarm has a good reputation, if your happy with it, I recommend you disable Norton's firewall if running
And the one enabled in SP2

THANK YOU..THANK YOU..THANK YOU. IT'S RUNNING FASTER AND NO MORE LAGGING. ALTHOUGH WHEN INTERNET EXPLORER TRIES TO OPEN ANOTHER WEBSITE - IT MAKES A CLICKING SOUND (LIKE CLICK-CLICK-CLICK) THEN OPENS THE WEBSITE AFTER ALL. BUT I GUESS IT'S OK. MUCH BETTER THAN PRIOR TO YOU HAVING IT CLEANED. ZONE ALARM FIREWALL IS OFF. SO IS THE NORTON. I ONLY HAD ONE FIREWALL RUNNING PREVIOUSLY-WHICH IS THE ZONE ALARM. I HAVE NORTON FOR MY ANTIVIRUS. ANYWAY, I'LL RELY ON SP2 FOR THAT RIGHT NOW SINCE IT'S ON DEFAULT ACDG. TO YOU. THANKS MR QUESTSOLO. YOU'RE  A GENIUS!! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

Can you just double check to make sure the SP2 firewall is enabled
You can do that thru the Windows Control Panel
I was suggesting you may want to stick with ZoneAlarm, but I'll leave that up to you

Yup. Windows firewall is on, so is automatic updates and virus protection.  My computer still makes a click-click-click-click-clicking sound when i go to a link. Is that ok you think?

I don't use IE that often, I always have Mozilla Firefox open unless I'm visiting Windows updates
Forgot all about the clicking sound

It's okay if you don't mind the clicking, but if it becomes too annoying, which I think it might

Open your Windows Control panel
In Classic View= Double click to open the
"Sound and Audio Devices" Icon

In Category View= Open "Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices"
Then Open= "Sounds and Audio Devices"

Click on the SOUNDS tab
Under "Program events"
You will have to look for an event called >>"Start Navigation"
(It's about half way down on the scroll bar)
Left click once on Start Navigation to highlight it
Then under Sounds use the drop down menu and select (None)
For that event
Apply it and Ok out of there
That should help you out  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
