Disabling password saves in 98SE
« on: December 06, 2001, 02:57:00 PM »
On some of the newer systems I\'ve been setting up at work have been coming in with an option enabled that allows users to click a check box on the bottom network logon form that will allow windows to cache the password and make all following logons automatic.  Obviously this isn\'t a very good security practice.

Is there anyway to disable this option or at the very least set it so the default on the check box is unchecked?  I can\'t seem to find any info from MS themselves.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks

From the M$ Knowledge Base:

Password caching is enabled or disabled using the Policy Editor tool (Poledit.exe) to change the following value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesNetworkDisablePw
dCaching

NOTE : This registry entry does not exist by default.

If you are using a mixed enviroment (ie 9X and NT) you should read Q137826 to understand the full story.  This can cause problems later.  If you are only using 9X it should work without any problems.
Hope this Helps,
