play movie with *.dat

I\'m trying to play a movie file with ext *.dat.
usually it runs fine with media player..(i\'m using media player 8.0) and  i tried with real player, powerdvd xp 4.0, xing mpeg.
 they all don\'t work..
any ideas on what else can  i try to play this file?

well i guess it\'s not really .dat file \'cause usually media player will just read it fine..i think it should be either .crc or .rez file but windows just read it as .dat file...
any help out there?

Concerning .dat files: I could play with certain (old )version of media player.

it is a file named mplayer.exe ---in windows 95 and 98. I haven\'t tried with other version  windows.

In Win95/98 there is also mplayer2.exe ---so make sure you are opening/playing by using mplayer.exe.

There are various ways to do that: one of them is
>right click your .dat file and choose >open with then hit >other button navigator to your mplayer.exe. It should be in either  #Windows# Directory Or #Program FilesPlus# or something like that.

There are programs which can convert .dat to .mpeg. not very sure which can. they should be ISOBUSTER like program. I have not succedded yet to convert. However there is this option which you might try.

1.Open Your file using Isobuster.exe
2.Choose extract mpeg frames.

NB: there should be some other programs which could do the job better. I do not know yet which is better

.dat is the extension used by VCDs. It is a slightly altered MPEG2 compression with better error correction.
A google search revealed this.
It will convert the dat files to mpeg.

a vcd dat file plays in mediaplayer 8.0 in winxp .
I have one of 1994 and it still plays in media player

do you guys know how to combine files (well, one way is using a program called \"resume\" which combines movie files, with one more .rez and .crc file)
any other program that will allow you to do this?
well it\'s basically a collection of .dat files which have to be combined together in order to see the whole movie.

Allmost all burning programs have the ability to burn vcd this days .They use *.mpg files .You can tranfer avi2mpg dat2mpg , avi2vcd .You can make your own movies as long as you respect the copyright there is no problem .
I only tranferred one avi (10 min.), to vcd film and burned it to a video CD to  try if it worked on my dvd player (and it did ,but poor video quality)  ,
Search the internet with a good search engine for AVI2MPG or DAT2MPG or AVI2VCD , and you\'ll find what you are looking for (f.e. Copernicus ,www.copernicus.com .)

For less than a hundred bucks you can have audio and video delievered to your stereo and tv wirelessly..i would look into that.. Its cheaper...faster...and you can make the files smaller by DivX...its a smart choice. Alternately you can have the sound feed to your tv RCA style with a 1/8 inch pin2rca cost, 5-30bucks....if there is a way to do it with video...like use your tv as a monitor with the parallel port or something....please post that info.

A .dat file will play fine in WMP8. It does it fine on all the installations i\'ve done of XP Pro. Just go into WMP, click open, and select to view all files. navigate to the location where the file\'s stored, and you\'ll see it. It\'ll then play it fine.

It\'s one of the first things i tested on XP... a year ago.

You can have your tv as a monitor with certain video cards (fe .voodo 3 3000) but then they only show your desktop on tv so you should be able to play your video file or vcd full screen to have the video full screen from your computer on your tv screen .The graphic card is connected to the video recorder with rca plug (I think you can even use a svhs cable). I have an mpeg card dxr3 (dvd dolby ac3) also connected to the TV . Almost everything is possible these days .My sound is connected to my  desktop theatre .
Video players will be replaced by digital recorders in the next future ,but still very expensive for the moment at least $650
