Just curious
« on: May 07, 2006, 05:18:07 PM »
Ran it, a similar error to this popped up several times (just different ini files):

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modRegistry_IniGetString(sFile=win.ini, sSection=windows, sValue=load)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [email protected], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

When done, here's the full log I got:

Note that the proxy listed is an old one that was on a server I ran, but I have it unchecked in my internet settings now.  So, does my laptop pass?

Any specific problems? I see you have some entries that most other users don't have
All look legit however
Eg..
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [GpsGate] "C:\Program Files\Franson\GpsGate\GpsGateXP.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SysSense] C:\Program Files\SysSense\SysSense.exe

We can remove that entry to the proxy server as you no longer need it
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 216.32.69.146:83
and a couple 016 entries (ActiveX controls)
That look related too old versions of Java
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Did you add these entries to your Hosts file?
You may have, that's why I'm just checking
O1 - Hosts: 72.21.43.229 www.alanbarber.org
O1 - Hosts: 72.21.43.229 alanbarber.org

Before we can fix those 016 entries in Hijackthis, you will more than likely have to shutdown Spybot's teatimer
as it will interfere with the fix

Question: When do you get the error message with Hijackthis
As soon as you open it or when you try and fix checked an entry?

If it's when you tried to fix checked an entry
Can you try this version of Hijackthis, save it and unzip it too a seperate folder of it's own and see if you get an error
Hijackthis 1.98.2

P.S. I see reference to Sun Java 5 update 4 in your log
Have you not updated to Sun Java 5 update 6 yet?  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

No problems, just thought I'd have the expert check it out just in case.  Actually, my mom's forum did get infected with a virus (which only affected IE users, so I had to visit with IE to see the problem), but AVG took care of that.  Otherwise, my system should be squeaky clean.

The errors that popped up were while it was running the scan, and were right at the beginning.  The new version you posted had no errors pop up.

GPSGateXP.exe is a program that lets me share a gps receiver with multiple programs.  Generally they like to take control of the port, but GPSGate sets up multiple virtual serial ports that I give the programs access to, and GPSGate is the one that actually has control of the gps receiver.

SysSense.exe is a program that checks my Adsense account, updating me on impressions, earnings, etc.

The entries in my hosts file are legit, I threw them in there when I couldn't get to a site due to dns issues (friend moved his sites to his own server, but left the old site on mine, so my dns server kept pointing me to the old site since it was never deleted).

If you want a real workout, I'll try to get a log off of my brother's laptop.  He's always getting into something, AVG and Spybot's Teatimer keep most of the stuff at bay, but he still manages to sneak a few things past somehow.

Yah, tell him too shoot his log over  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
I'm up to the challenge

Thanks for the info on SysSense
I had a good idea about
GPSGate

Note: If you would like to fix those entries with Hijackthis
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 216.32.69.146:83
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
Although not malicious, but leftovers

As mentioned, you will probably have to enter Spybot>>Mode>>Advanced mode
Tools>>Resident>>Uncheck "Resident teatimer"
Allow the change

Most times a reboot is needed afterwards
Then run a scan only with Hijackthis>>Tick and then fix checked just those above entries with all other windows closed
Reboot one more time

Then go back and reenable TeaTimer

Not sure if you seen my edit above, it was last second

Normally, what I suggest
Go into Windows Control panel and open the java icon and try the updater
If it won't work, use the following link
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Personally, I like the Windows Offline installation

After the latest verison is installed
Go to add/remove programs and remove all earlier updates and versions
I've never had a problem that way or removing all earlier updates and versions first and then installing the latest

I'm locking this topic as this poster really never had any problems
