Can you do the following for me please
I want to check on a couple files
then we'll do some fixes

Go to either of these links
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
or
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINDOWS\mdm.exe <-this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please
Do the same for these ones too
c:\program files\Webdialer\od-shma2.exe <-this file
Are there any other files in the Webdialer folder?

Could you search your computer for the next ones and scan them also if found
joalee.exe
gg64.exe

Additionally, At least one bad guy on your computer likes to write to the Hosts file
Can you Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open HOST FILE MANAGER
Click the OPEN IN NOTEPAD button
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of that text file back to me please

Code: [Select]
EDIT>>If you have troubles going to either Jotti's or Virustotal
Can I see the Hosts text file first from Hijackthis
You may be getting blocked from accessing those sites

guestolo,

Below is log from mdm.exe scan on VirusTotal. I do not see a Webdialer Folder any where and the browser could not find

od-shma2.exe or joalee.exe or gg64.exe

I will do the Hiijacker thing next and send because when I "toggle" back to your posted reply I seem to lose what I've already poted on this reply.

Thanks again for your patience.

VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

That's fine, I just wanted to make sure the hosts file wasn't effected
It looks good

Let's run some tools please

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1
Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Close it out, don't run a scan yet, we'll need it later

==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5

When installing, under "Additional Options" UNCHECK

    "Install background guard"
     "Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the auto updater won't work
Please manually update from this link
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Don't run the Demo mode
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
The first time you run CleanUp!, it may prompt to run in demo mode anyways
Don't allow it, let it actually clean please
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

=Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

Find and send these files to the recycle bin if found, exact names and locations please
C:\WINDOWS\mdm.exe <-this file
C:\WINDOWS\winview.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\CaseyVideo[1].exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WID32.EXE <-file

==Open Spybot 1.4
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

Remain in safe mode
==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
Not all may be found, but fix what you see

guestolo,

I got as far as going into safe mode and running Cleanup (it found and deleted ~13K files/~308MB). However, according to your instructions, the next step was to open smitrem folder. I don't have a smitrem folder/program that I can find and I don't remember you telling me to download this.

What should I do - and if you want me to download/find smitrem and continue should I reboot, go back to safe mode - and should I run cleanup again.

Thanks oh powerful one. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

guestolo,

I don't seem to be getting emails (outlook) also and I am seeing www.webtopsecurity.com/vg/as/sec-13asfks wanting to delete files (i have been cancelling becuase it runs very slow and i am not even sure what it is doing or if it is legit). It looks like I haven't been getting emails since latelast week when this all started. I would have told you about the email thing earlier but i did not notice. While i am an email freak at work, i don't use it at home that much. I prefer to talk to people in person.

Don't know if this matters but it just another PITA.

Wayne

Can you go back and follow the instructions again, I've edited it to EXCLUDE SmitRem

Do what you can from the above and then post back the required logs
Do what you can , if you can't accomplish a step, let me know about it later please

guestolo,

Just an update. My email is working now and I don't have the red x or the yellow triangle in my system tray and have not seen a pop-up for the last two hours. Let me know what's next.

your humble servant http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Can you do the following one more time please
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CaseyVideo[1]] c:\windows\CaseyVideo[1].exe

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

I expect that you will keep Spybot 1.4, and least I hope you will?
It's a great tool
Do you have Ad-Aware SE personal 1.06 installed too? If not you should
I will give you a direct link to it!

Can you post one last fresh hijackthis log please, let me know if you have Ad-Aware installed
Just some quick final cleanup steps and we're done here

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

guestolo,

Here is latest hijack scan.

I will keep Spybot 1.4 (i already paid for it hoping that would solve all of this) - should I have in start up and always running?

I do not have ad-aware se personal 1.06. If you give me a shortcut and I download this i have same question as above. i have seen problems in the past with too many virus checkers running. they seem to get confused with each other. with both of these do i set them for automatic udates?

I assume I should keep norton going and leave it on automatic run (~3:00 am) and keep auto live updates.

Also, my roomate used to use aol and it's spyzapper runs when i reboot and probably at other times. should i delete/turn that off?

Thanks again http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

I will keep Spybot 1.4 (i already paid for it hoping that would solve all of this)
Not sure what you mean by that, Spybot 1.4 is free, however, they do accept donations

I would always try and keep your AV up to date

Also, my roomate used to use aol and it's spyzapper runs when i reboot and probably at other times. should i delete/turn that off?
If AOL is not needed, yes go ahead and turn it off
Actually, if you don't use AOL, why not just uninstall it?

I do not have ad-aware se personal 1.06. If you give me a shortcut and I download this i have same question as above. i have seen problems in the past with too many virus checkers running. they seem to get confused with each other. with both of these do i set them for automatic udates?
Ad-Aware or Spybot won't cause conflicts, Spybot does have the builtin TeaTimer, but that won't interfere

But you are right, ONLY use one Anti-Virus software
More than one can cause conflicts

Here is the link for Ad-Aware
Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Can you do the following please
That one entry in your log refuses to leave

From the bottom of this reply box
Download and save Run_Keys.zip, then UNZIP to desktop so you have
Run_Keys.bat extracted
Double click on Run_Keys.bat
A text file will open, can you copy and paste back here the whole contents please

guestolo,

Below is run keys file. Also, i made a mistake. The software i bought is called XoftSpy. I do not have it scheduled to run automatically yet. I did delete all of Email Removed So i gues my question is:

Always have Norton running?

When should I run Ad-Aware and/or Spybot and/or XoftSpy on a regular basis?

I guess were gettingclose. I still have seen no other problems/pop-ups, etc.

Thanks again.

if AOL is not your ISP and you don't need the product installed, I suggest you remove it, but that's your call

If AOL is not needed, yes go ahead and turn it off
Actually, if you don't use AOL, why not just uninstall it?
Xoftspy>>I don't use it and don't normally recommend it, again, your call to have it installed or running
I don't put much faith in this software because of their past history
Again>>Your call

guestolo,

OK now you have confused me (being the IT intellectual I am) - you say to go to note pad (OK) and then "copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad". What "CODE box" http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> ???!!

I did completely uninstall Email Removed
I have no problems (that i know of) with norton.

As always, thanks for your patience.

I'll upload what I wanted you to do
From the bottom of this reply box
Download and save to your desktop fix.zip

Extract the contents of fix.zip to your desktop so you now have fix.reg extracted

close all other open windows
Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to your registry at the prompt

Reboot your computer
Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log
