how to turn off ACPI in w2k
« on: February 25, 2002, 09:12:37 PM »
Does anyone here know how I can disable ACPI on my w2k machine?

Every time I select shutdown, w2k powers down my machine - which is not what I want...I\'d rather have w2k halt all services and just show a \"restart\" button. Reason why I prefer this is because I have all my pc\'s hooked to 2 banks of power switches, ie. I control which machines I want to power up from these boxes and don\'t toggle the power button on the individual machines.

TIA

so don\'t shutdown. just log-off the machine.
if at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0

Advanced power management needs to be turned off in the BIOS.  BUT .. changing the status of advanced power management will require reinstalling Win2k (there is a different HAL for Advanced power on or Advanced power off)

I believe there is a registry key for this.  Generally one would go in to set it to true to have it auto power off, but you should be able to do the reverse as well.

Search for making your PC power off automatically and you\'ll have a better chance of finding the answer you need.

I disabled all the power management features in the BIOS and tried reinstalling w2k, but the plug & play is still detecting the hardware and insists on loading the drivers. Even tried disabling the driver under the profile but no luck.

I did find a registry key for ACPI but in experimenting with different values, the best i could do was have the machine reboot when \'shut-down\' was selected. Could not get the machine to \'shut-down\' without it automatically powering down the entire system.

You can install and ignore ACPI.  I had to do this with one of the early betas because the support was broken on the PC I was trying to install on.  See: http://www.pchardware.ro/Articles/article.php?id=127 for more details.
