Problems with PC

It seems that my girlfriend excepted one of those mysterious files being send over MSN messenger and when its accepted it won't let me run any of my protection software ewido, ad-aware, spybot, or hijackthis, any suggestions on how to get around it?

it also changed my homepage to, http://www.virushelpzone.com/, which always changes back, after I reset it

I also wanted to note, that everytime that I tried to run Hijackthis.exe, it would open, but then it would close before i could do anything and it seemed like my desktop would refresh itself, and close everything that was open (eg. my computer folder).  I tried to reinstall it, but i would get the same effect when I tried to run the setup process

its really mind bogglying, could you please help

Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
  • Once open, click the button labelled "[color=\"red\"]Search and Destroy[/color]"
    <<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "[color=\"red\"]REBOOT[/color]" Button.
  • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
  • [color=\"blue\"]A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish[/color]
It will produce a log at C:\msnvirrem.log

Post that log along with a Hijackthis log

Can you still do the following please

Print the rest of these instructions, or copy>>Paste them too a text file saved too desktop

Download>>Install [color=\"#000099\"]AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5[/color] from Ewido networks
  • Load AVG-antispyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close it afterwards, as we will need it later
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the top of the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window

Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
[/list]* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type:
cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
AVG-AntiSpyware Scan
  • Load AVG-Antispyware and Select the "Scanner" tab
  • Click the "Settings" tab, Under "How to Act", click on "recommended action" and change to Quarantine and ensure that  Automatically generate report after every scan is selected
  • Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Let this scan complete, let it run uninterrupted
  • AVG will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As".  This will create a text file.  Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: pushow25.dll


After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer back to Normal windows

Post back the following
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from AVG antispyware

Can you do the following please
Ensure to rescan with Hijackthis and save a logfile from Normal windows and post a fresh log

Also, let me know how things are running please

One I missed

If you find this file can you delete it please
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pushow25.dll <-this file

We should update your version of Java
Malware can exploit the holes in older versions

Can you do the following
==Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement[/i]".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation Multi-language
Save the file to your Desktop.
Don't install it yet

Open your Windows control panel>>Start>>control Panel
Ensure you are in Classic view
Double click to open the Java Icon>>Under the General tab click "Delete Files"
Leave all 3 selections checked and click "OK"
Exit Java

Access your Add/remove programs via Control Panel
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE or Java 2 Runtime Environment.... )
They should have the following icon next to it:  
Select it and click Remove on any of them

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Double click to install the latest version of Java
follow the prompts
After installation you can delete the installer from your desktop

If everything is running better
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Name it and click create
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the 'More Options' tab
and click Cleanup under System Restore
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool  
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
    *Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
    *Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

In addition>>Open Spybot 1.4
Click on Immunize>>Ok>>Immunize again at the top green cross
Check for Immunization after every update

NOTE: AVG-Antispyware is fully functional for 30 days
After which time it will become a free limited version
It will still update and remove malware after the trial period
Up to you to keep it or uninstall it

I couldn't find this above file, is that bad? should I be able too?

The file may be gone
Just as a double check
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Go to START>>MyComputer
Open Local Disk C: folder>>Windows>>System32
Take a look for the file, if found remove it
Don't delete something because it may look similiar

You can go back and reverse the changes to rehide Hidden files and folders later
