LAPTOP PROBLEM

I have been given a old laptop with no hard drive to play with.

it is i belive a:
Cleve/Kapok 3300c (FCCID # L4PK3100CX13)
600MH - PENT3 - 256MB Ram
Bios = SystemsoftMobile Pro v 1.01 -- 10/22/98

WHEN TRYING TO LOAD XP
it runs thought the set up as per normal. theN when you go to load windows it only see's 8gb of the 40gb harddrive???? (why is this). I PARTITION AS 8GB AND FORMAT then shows error msg saying cannot contiune please chjoose a different partition

how can i make it see the full 40gb H/D  and not just 8gb, and why wont it load windows???

all help is appricated

BIOS upgrade would be my guess, I would first see it the manufacturer of the laptop as an upgrade
