Missing hal.dll

Hi, when i boot up my laptop i get Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
 Please re-install a copy of the above file." Also i have lost my xp disk and I can remember my admin password so i cant get the recovery console up, Anyone know how to fix this or how much it would cost to repair at a shop? Thanks.

I take it you mean that you can't remember your admin password?

Does this mean you have recovery console installed?

You can reset admin password
See tool and instructions
I've used Offline NT Password & Registry Editor and had to reset >>  *
The asterik before, but it's been awhile
