Problems installing o/s
« on: September 24, 2002, 12:18:46 AM »
I have tried to install windows 2000 on my computer, first off lets start with what I\'m doing:

bought new harddrive, an IBM 120gb. Tried formatting it with dos, but fdisk saw it as a wonderful new 52.2gb drive.

so I went back and plugged my old 30gb drive back into my computer and booted into win2k with it, and formatted the 120gb drive as an NTFS drive, got 118gb\'s out of it.

now then I shut down, remove the 30gb and insert my win2k pro cd, and boot. Setup goes normally until the end, at the bottom is says \"starting windows 2000\" and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens, I let it sit for 30mins and still nothing.

I then rebooted and tried with my new windows XP Pro (I hate XP but will use it if forced to) and the same exact thing happened!

anybody have any ideas?

M/B Iwill KK266
chip AMD Tbird 1.1gig (first thing I did was clock it back to 1.1gig)
memory 768megs of PC133 (one chip of 512mb, one of 256mb)
drives IBM 120gb master on primary, NEC 12x10x32x CD-RW master on secondary, sony 5x DVD slave on primary

expansion cards:
AGP - MSI GeForce 4 Ti
pci 2 - Hollywood Plus dvd-decoder
pci 3 - 3Com 905c 10/100 card

onboard: C-media 5.1 sound card

anybody have any ideas? I\'ve never had a problem installing an O/S before... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

Bios updates?

is the120 gig setup to the master driver?

what about removing all partitions on the 120 and let the w2k setup format it?

I wouldnt suggest installing a os on a 120 gig first.   It\'s obviously going to be used for storage and to have your os on the same hdd you use for storage will decrease system performance alot.

Anyhow. If your at the part where the screen is black and you see a loading bar at the bottom then you might have to reinstally.

Or if your at the gui part where the screen is supposed to just go away and show your logon screen...then it might not be formatted correctly.

Windows will format a 120 gig but i wouldnt suggest using windows to format anything at all not even a  floppy.

It could very well be windows trying to detect the drive with plug\'n play but that wouldnt not make sense now that i have typed that because then it wouldnt see the hdd to even start up.

So it\'s a partition problem.

btw im getting one of those 120gig IBM\'s next week...how much did you pay??? ~140$ ??
