yeh sure.
download a program called tmpgenc
it will do it for you
even has a wizard.
but on the other hand...depending on howmuch $$ you have you could use CCE SP 2.64...you might be able to find a version floating around :]
anyhow this require\'s a more stable OS...anything but NT4/win2k i don\'t recommend (maybe XP but i have\'nt tried it yet)
if you do get that. You can do this.
use a program called avisynth. it\'s just a small text script you would format to point to your current .mpg to pass it off as a .avi to CCE. You can find out how to do that easily at doom9.org or the homepage.
CCE SP will not accept .mpg..only .avi, .dv, or .mov to my knowledge so you will have to use avisynth to do it.
you could however use dvd2avi but i don\'t know if it support\'s mpeg-1 and i don\'t know if your .mpg is mpeg-1 or not
After setting the script up...which is real easy if you jus\'t want to encode it \"as is\" you would open up the dummpy file that avisynth create\'s to load into cce. This requires more cpu power but works. I would suggest you really open up your .mpg you have now in a NLE (a.k.a video editor) and save it as a true .avi but it would require ALOT more hdd space. Like 60gigs or even more pending on the length ofmovie.
You can follow the guide at doom9.org for what you should do in cce to get the best quality.
note the limitation\'s of svcd are low so you might want to read the svcd guide there aswell. or check the spec\'s of svcd at
www.vcdhelper.comi encode mpeg-2 stream\'s everyday for dvd (higher bitrate than svcd ~700mb for 20min\'s).
all in all tmpgenc will do the trick for you if your freak outed too much. you can find a link to it at doom9.org on the download page.
tmpgenc is real easy...like i said after you install it and run it it will load a wizard mode. on the left you will see different type\'s of encoding options. there you would pick svcd for your encoding type. then load your .mpg for the video and then again for the audio. proceed completely until it start\'s to encode....wait...then burn
BIG NOTE: most dvd players will accept vcd and svcd but more than likely they all now days will accept vcd...NOT svcd.
also if your player supports vcd and svcd you should try to load it as is and burn it in vcd mode. It will say it doesn\'t meet the compliancy (alteast nero will) but you will have a option to proceed. I would try that first. That is officially a xvcd...the x representing a variant from the standard. If your player play\'s that you don\'t have to do anything but burn. I would try this first if i was you because if it does play xvcd your saving all the time it take\'s to reencode by just burning it.
Another note: :-). Sometimes a player will play one xvcd and not another...this is the only draw back. It depend\'s on framerate of your source .mpg file 9/10 time\'s. If the framerate is anything above 29.976 (30fps) or 24frame\'s progressive you might not...actually you do not want to burn that as is.
tmpgenc is not as fast as cce...but with framsaving in avisynth or resaving it as a uncompressed .avi file would take even longer to get it done in cce.
ALSO: if your source...the file you got...is mpeg-1 there is no reason at all to reencode into a mpeg-2 stream unless your putting it on dvd. the quality can only go down when compressing a uncompressed file or a compressed one. So in other words you could choose to encode to a mpeg-2 stream of 10mbs (real big) and it would\'nt look any better...could only look = or worse to your orginal...most times it will look worse. Especially if your going from ~1200mbs (~vcd) to ~2200mbs (~svcd). this reencode will be NOTICABLY worse.
my advice...load it into nero right now...if it doesn\'t prompt you that it\'s not compliant for vcd then burn it...if it does still proceed and burn it. Test that out in your dvd player...if it don\'t play...use tmpgenc to reencode it to a vcd compliant .mpg and burn that in nero or whatever. HOwever do NOT use nero to encode it...it is way slower and far less clarity will be apparent.
xvcd..if not tmpgenc to a compliant one
if your source is a mpeg-2 stream already and you just don\'t know it...the proceed with the same advice for that...9/10 if it play\'s svcd it will play xsvcd (yeh there\'s such a thing with the x with svcd aswell).
If you notice alot of jerk\'n or it stopping and going digitally crazy on you...you should reencode to a compliant level match your source file you have now in tmpgenc. don\'t got from mpeg-1 to mpeg-2 unless you plan on putting that mpeg-2 on a dvd...just a waste of space.
hope that helps
