Did you purposely install flashmenu?
If not remove it

Also, in add/remove programs
Remove the older version of Java
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3

Here's what you may want to try and see if it's any help

Go to the following link and download the latest Nvidia driver to desktop
But do not install it yet
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html

Disconnect the internet cable from the back of you computer

go into add/remove programs and remove NVIDIA Drivers
Reboot the computer

Back in Windows, if you get new hardware found prompt, just cancel it
Then install latest drivers from desktop
reboot the computer
Connect back to the internet

If screen resolution on your computer is set higher than 1024x768
Set to that resolution
Right click on desktop>>Select properties>Settings tab

Check your Windows firewall, ensure your allowing all of HL to access
Go into Windows firewall in control panel>>Exceptions tab
Is all of HL allowed?

Temporarily disable Windows Defender's protections
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Try Steam again, any luck?

You could ensure you have the latest sound driver
Go to the following link and download the latest
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downlo...p;GetDown=false

Should use download location beside
Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows 98 SE, DirectX®8 is required to enable advanced features. (Executable file)

Save to desktop
Again, disconnect from Internet
Uninstall Realtek AC'97 Audio from add/remove

reboot
Install latest
reboot again to ensure everything is running properly

any luck?

ok it finally down loaded the driver. Now in add and remover its just calling it real tec ac97 audio. Its not saying its a driver.

Now prior to all that I did go into add and remove and clicked on Steam amd it gave me an option to repair. I tried it. Well, it didn't run all the way. But when I reboot it does load up on start up which it hadn't done in a long time. After it ran some a window pops up and wants me to hit ok for a destination file. I hit it but it just keeps tossing a file across going nowhere.

Whats your take on that?

Yah, I'm not that big of a Steam fan, so I'm not going to install it to see what problems may be
You may have better luck at the Steam forums

Sorry you try out the audio drivers?

No problem.

I'm just so frustrated. And even though the memtest passed I'm gonna start pulling sticks of ram out one at a time. Is there any other hardware tests I can try? ie motherboard, hard drive.

Wow!

Found the problem boss. Memory. What I don't understand is why the memtest86.iso failed to pick up on that.

And dang it all if I didn't delete Steam and lose all my profile for COD4. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> Oh well I did back up the file and also made a copy of my profile. Just not sure once I get it all loaded up if it will work. With my luck it won't. Man if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any at all.

Good work Mr. Bell, it may not be that the Ram is bad, but the 2 or more sticks may not be compatible and causing problems
I totally forgot about your AntiVirus, did you reinstall AVG?

No I haven't reinstalled AVG cause when I went to the site I didn't see any free version just the trial n.

ok with 1 gig of ram I was able to get on the game a litle bit. But when I logged off it frose once again.

Is there anyway you would be able to look at a msinfo32.info to see if there are any conflicts showing. Reason I ask is Steam responded finally and mentoned that. I would need to up load it to you.

Here's the link to the free AVG
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Fre...cdlpid=10760089

Just delay a bit on installing it, watch what you download however

If your getting help finally at the Steam forums
Why not post them the info for msinfo32??

Go to START>>RUN>>type in
msinfo32.exe

I did sir. It will probably be days before I hear anything from Steam. But I'll hold off on things and let you know.
