NEED HELP!!
« on: April 19, 2008, 04:00:46 PM »
months ago my laptop completely crashed...

I ended up trying to reinstall all the drivers and windows and all that myself...

while I got most of it back up and running close to what it used to be...there is still something wrong with it...

it starts up really slow...I've done an ad-aware search, a spybot s&d search, as well as run my norton anti virus...

I got a registry change found today and I haven't restarted my computer yet but whenever I did this before with a registry issue it would always come back...could someone look at a hijack this log and let me know if something is wrong?

If you don't have the latest version of Hijackthis
Can you do the following
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open
can you just close it for now, we'll need it later

Afterwards:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) to your desktop.
Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

NEED HELP!!
« Reply #3 on: April 21, 2008, 09:50:53 PM »
Let's try some steps and see how things are running afterwards

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
Save it to your desktop
We'll need it later

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • From that link scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, beside Platform
  • Check the "agree" box and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (15.21 MB) and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

-In your case remove
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Don't install the new version yet
Don't reboot the computer yet

Instead:
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.

Wait for the "Done Cleaning" prompt
Hit OK

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
================================================
Startup may be slower at reboot, as we have cleared the prefetch folder
Startup time will increase when the Prefetch folder is repopulated

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed in 2006, read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
You might want to remove the program. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

    * Viewpoint
    * Viewpoint Manager
    * Viewpoint Media Player

Reboot the computer
Afterwards: Install the latest version of Sun Java from the installer on desktop

Come back and post a fresh hijackthis log, let me know how things are running

NOTE: I see Norton Internet Security 2007 installed, which can be quite a resource hog
Did this come preinstalled?
When does the subscription expire?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Norton did come pre-installed when I orginally got the laptop...when it crashed I reinstalled it and the subscription has been renued and is up in 59 days...

so far the computer seems to be running ok...i dunno if this is normal or not but when it boots up...my wallpaper comes up...then a few seconds into startup it goes black and then back to the wallpaper...I don't think it ever did that before the crash a few months ago...it's still doing that...

Reboot a couple more times, it could be your video drivers need updating or software loading such as Norton's

I would like you to try something different than Norton IS
As the resources it uses, but if your use to it
you also have the option of maybe adding more RAM to the computer

I have links to free AV's and Firewall's if needed
Decide if you feel the need to renew the subscription with Symantec's

Note: I don't recommend downloading and installing free screensaver's from the Internet unless you know they are absolutely safe
If you didn't intentionally install a screensaver
Access your Add and Remove Programs and remove screensaver
reboot the computer afterwards
See if it may be the cause of the wallpaper disappearing after a few seconds

« Reply #6 on: April 24, 2008, 02:34:36 PM »
ok so things have been going fairly well...

until about 5 mins ago...

I looked down at the computer and saw the evil blue screen...

this is what started all the problems when the computer originally crashed...

I managed to write some of this blue screen down before the computer restarted...

kernal_stack_inpage_error

technical info
Stop: 0x00000077 (0x00000001, 0x027629e0, 0x00000000, 0xa9790ca0)

beginning dump of physical memory
dumping physical memory to disk (then numbers counting up)

I dunno if this is the same blue screen from before...but normally the blue screen I got before would just appear quickly...definetly not enough time for me to jot down all the info I got from this one...

any ideas?

Just to be certain you are virus free, can we run an online virus scan on your computer

I suggest that you temporarily disable Norton's AV ahead of time so it won't interfere with the scanning process

Then, use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended
    • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases

• Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

        To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
        Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

        That scan looks good
        Let's check for device problems
Right click on MyComputer icon and select Properties
        Select>>HARDWARE>>DEVICE MANAGER

Go to Control Panel>>Administrative tools>>Event Viewer
        Highlight Application on the left
On the right hand side look for Winlogon under Source, this will give info on the chkdsk report
Ensure of correct time/date of scan

Then use the (Ctrl + C) keys on the keyboard to copy this info>No brackets

In a reply box back here use the (Ctrl + V) keys to paste the info>No brackets

ok here's the chkdsk I could find...when I followed your directions, chkdsk said the disk was clean and booted windows...I figured this was because my computer had automatically done a chkdsk scan on the 7th...so this is the description from that one...

        should I do chkdsk again?

The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You

This appears it may be more a hardware problem
I was thinking Ram, but since you said chkdsk ran it's own a few days ago
        may be harddisk is going
I'm not sure what you mean that the system crashed

Are you saying you have to start all over again and clean install Windows?
