Linux: If a ISA modem is or isnt a WinModem? How?
« on: November 15, 2002, 01:45:36 AM »
I know that if you have a pci modem it is more than likely to be a winmodem. However i know that the ISA modems are different. Like if it is DOS compatible it should also work in Linux. However i have, seriously, about 30 modems which are all ISA. I plan on throwing these things out since i get them in salvage computer\'s there are old. However i would like one to record phone conversations in Linux. Now i have see some app\'s that will do this, but are my ISA modems \"to win or not to win\" is the ?.

These are older modems. I have some newer modems aswell that are 56k/v90. LIke i have a Rockwell 56/kFlex and a Rockwell 33.6 Pnp. Im guessing this are winmodems. However they are ISA.

I have even older ISA\'s that are 28.8 and 14.4. Any modem will do since im just going to be recording the conversation and not using the internet.

Only problem is...how can i tell if they are ISA (Dos compt.) or not. I really never tried this in Linux and find that i cannot run any of them right now, but that doesnt mean they all dont work.  They could all not work but im guessing atleast one has to work. I just dont know how to really tell the difference in ISA modems.

Finding the manufacturer and finding out if they are or aren\'t isnt that easy. Most of these modems manufacturer\'s are either out of business, change hands, or just so old there is no relavent data to these modems anymore.

Hi Space Between

Yeah well you\'d know more about linux and modems then I so this is more a grasp at straws comment.

Think you would have to nail which chip/set is used in it either by visual inspection and type numbers

The other way maybe to install with windows and see which modem it \"thinks\" you have and chase back the chipset.

When I was playing with Linux this was part of my problem, although it was suppose to work with linux I couldn\'t get it too
(rockwell 33.6 chipset, can\'t recall the number of the set)

Most manufactures (as you are probably aware) would use a popular chip from a big chip maker and I guess with the smaller  name sellers just buy and rebadge the unit.
(althought some my special order a number on a common chip, or rub it out)

There are a few site I found on modems and bet there are a heap more on modems for linux use.

this site may help

http://www.modemsite.com/

This page

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/chipset.asp

althought you have older modems so that info may be abit harder to find.

this page well worth a look

http://www.modem-help.co.uk/chips/

some other sites I found

http://www.mbsi.ca/cnxtlindrv/

http://www.vee90.net/chipsets_lucent1.html

http://www.linmodems.org/

http://modems.rosenet.net/pn.php/128

Anyway mate hope this is of some help to you

Thank you it helps alot actually. I got one modem working...the pctel chipset so far.

I have the same chipset rockwell as you...or most likely. It\'s the RCVDL336ACF/SP.  That is a pretty good modem...or atleast it supports voice :-/.  I use that modem currently to record conversations in win98 with modemspy.

Im having trouble config\'n the modem for voice in linux right now..i will get back to ya when i can finally record in it.

Thanks for the info....helped alot actually.
