Can we just double check for any malware/spyware,
Then we can deal with what's in the hijackthis log, nothing malicious, just some fine tuning

download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Can you also post a fresh hijackthis log afterwards too

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Daughter's computer slooow
« Reply #3 on: November 28, 2008, 02:17:37 PM »
Can you do me a favor, I see your using msconfig to control some startup items
Nothing malicious, but I like to use msconfig as a trouble shooting tool

Can you do the following please
Go to START>>RUN>>type in msconfig

Then hit OK

Under the General tab select>>Normal Startup
Apply it and Close
Restart the computer at the prompt

Of course this means we'll be enabling Spybot's TeaTimer
But we'll deal with that when the computer reboots

Back in Windows
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Click Allow Change box if prompted
Close Spybot

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
You will be prompted to select any key a couple times
This will only take a few seconds.

You can then delete ResetTeaTimer.bat

Reboot the computer again
Back in Windows
Can I see a fresh hijackthis log please
I only need the HijackThis log, you can paste it to a reply back here
In your case, navigate to the following folder
C:\Program Files\trend micro

Run Owner.exe or Hijackthis.exe if found
Do a System Scan and save logfile, post the whole contents of the log that opens back here
For convenience, you can right click on Owner.exe and Send to Desktop (create shortcut)

Once you've done that, we'll remove some entries and see how things run afterwards

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Done, couple of other things. Symantec keeps blocking NTOSKRNL.exe from NT Kernel and System and there is this annoying GreenDay welcome/goodbye screen that we can't get rid of.

Sorry for the delay, I'm not at home right now, out of province, so I may have a delayed reply

Do a System Scan Only with Hijackthis

Put a tick next to the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0CB66BA8-5E1F-4963-93D1-E1D6B78FE9A2} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
O4 - Startup: Adobe Media Player.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe Media Player\Adobe Media Player.exe
O4 - Global Startup: BigFix.lnk = C:\Program Files\BigFix\BigFix.exe
02002/ocx/15030/CTPID.cab
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

After you have ticked the above entries
Keep Hijackthis open, but close all other open windows, including this one
Click FIX CHECKED>>Ok the prompts
NOTE: Hijackthis may put up an error message, just ignore it

Reboot the computer

Come back and post a fresh hijackthis log

After you have ticked the above entries
Keep Hijackthis open, but close all other open windows, including this one
Click FIX CHECKED>>Ok the prompts
NOTE: Hijackthis may put up an error message, just ignore it

icons came up immediately after reboot. system tray is still real slow. the only things in there are Norton Endpoint, messenger and picasa 2. Endpoint keeps telling me that it is blocking traffic from VT Kernel and System (NTOSKRNL.EXE), Endpoint also caused me headaches with my other computer so I took it off. I also have this annoying Green Day screen that comes up after the e machines screen and before the Windows desktop. It says "welcome" when booting and "saving settings" when shutting down.

The Green day screen I'm unsure about
Did she have any software that changes screens or modifies settings in XP at one time and has since removed it?

I've never used Endpoint, but I found a discussion here:
https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/me...p;message.id=57

Let me know if it helps?

Wow that made my head hurt! I got rid of Endpoint and went back to Norton 2009. Other than the green day thing the computer is running quicker for sure and that's what was important. She downloaded a Green Day theme which I uninstalled but this was left somewhere in there. i'll get it figured out eventually. thanks for the help with this one.

Wasn't sure if it was a downloaded theme or not
Is this the one she downloaded?
http://green-day-theme.en.softonic.com/images

It's probably just a change in Appearance in Display options
I'm just double checking

Edit>>Actually I just noticed the following
C:\Program Files\Plus!
which may indicate you have Microsoft Plus! pack for XP installed
You should have a Themes tab in Display Properties in the Windows Control Panel
In the drop down box choose the Theme you prefer
Eg.. Windows XP

NOTE: I don't have the Plus! pack installed, you may first want to check if you have the following
In Windows Control Panel>>Desktop Themes

Her Plus directory is empty, it used to be on there but we got rid of it. I'm not going to lose sleep over it, the computer is working much better than it did. appreciate the help.
