Local Access Only - Internet Not Working

A friend was telling me that their wi-fi was not working on their laptop. They told me that it was working intermittenly and then it just completely stopped working. I went over to check out the problem, because I usually can troubleshoot wi-fi connections. She has a HP Pavillion dv6000. It has a switch on the front for the wireless, but either way I push it the light is orange. I connected it directly to her modem and got into the configuration by typing 196.168.1.1 Everything looked normal. I tested out the wireless in her home on another laptop and it worked fine.

I told her that I needed to take the laptop home. So I took it home, plugged it into my router via an ethernet cable, and I could not connect to the internet! It said local access only unidentified network. For the life of me I cannot get the computer to connect to the internet. I was hoping you could help. I am waiting on an external hard drive so I can copy hijack this to her computer so I can then copy the log file to my computer to post to the internet. Though, if you have any advice I'd appreciate it.

Also just to clear things up a bit... In the first post I didn't explain myself very well. At my friends house, I was able to plug in an ethernet cable to connect to the itnernet. Everything worked very well, like plug and play. I took the computer home and tried to find wireless networks (nothing) THEN I  went to plug in directly, like I did at her place. I did this so I could post here. I couldn't connect to the internet though. It keeps saying that it is an unidentified network, and I cannot figure out how to fix this. I changed it it a private connection and still nothing.

Try this at your place, wired to the Router
Your going to have to transfer one file to the desktop of this laptop

I see remnants of Symantec's installed,
Download and transfer to the desktop the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL
from STEP 3

Right click on the Norton Removal tool and choose to "Run as Administrator"
Follow the prompts, type the verification code when prompted
When it's done, if asked to restart the computer, do so, if you are not asked to restart
Do the next steps regardless
Shut down all computers in household, including the laptop

Unplug the power from ROUTER and MODEM
Replug in the Modem, let it detect connection
Then plug in the Router, let it detect,
Afterwards, try booting the laptop and see if it has Internet connection

Check, did all of that. Still no cigar. She has all this automatic help stuff always running the show. (HP total care assistant) When I right click on the network icon in the system tray and go to network and sharing center I notice it defaults to public network instead of private. I also can't seem to find any of the manual network options. I'm looking to set up my network manually so I can make sure everything is in synch.
