Bizarre problems with Acer Aspire One A110
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:07:19 PM »
Hello,

I have had an Acer Aspire One A110 for about a year now. Originally it came with a 8gb SSD, but we changed it to a 30gb hard disk. It has been a very problematic computer for the entire time I've had it, but lately things are getting worse and worse.

Yesterday, I was normally using the netbook under Windows 7. Suddenly, I noticed that I was not able to connect into our home WLAN network anymore. I rebooted the router, thinking that it was a issue with the network (they're very common here) but soon noticed that in fact, the AAO had lost the entire wireless network card from its hardware listing! My other computer's wireless network connection was okay. I rebooted the computer a few times with no luck. The wireless network card had completely disappeared. I decided to turn the whole computer off and let it be for a while. Later in the day, I tried turning it on again - and strangely enough, the wireless was working fine.

I then managed to use the computer for a few hours. Then, another problem struck. The computer froze completely, and the only way out was to turn it off brute-force. I pressed the power button for five seconds, and it went off. However, when I turned it on again, it wouldn't recognize the hard disk at all! This had happened before, so I didn't panic, and just turned it off. I decided to let it cool off for a bit again. After about half a hour, I tried booting it up again - and everything worked fine. The hard disk was recognized normally. I got to Windows with no problems, and was able to continue using it normally.

So, it worked for the last night - but today, new problems appeared.

I was using the AAO normally, as always - surfing in the net. I then left it alone for a while and started to use my other computer. After about 15 minutes, I turned back to the AAO. It greeted me with a very strange, distorted blue screen. The background color was the usual blue, but the text was garbled and impossible to read.

I turned the computer off and then back on. Everything worked for about two hours, but then it froze again. I (you probably guess it already http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />) turned the computer off. The next time I booted, the HARD DISK HAD DISAPPEARED AGAIN, and it made a weird clicking sound, as if it was trying to start spinning repeatedly. The hard disk wouldn't show up on the BIOS. It then went into its default "network boot" mode. And then, when I pressed the power button to turn it off...

The screen started to fade into white really slowly, and then inverted back to black. The text was visible for the whole time. I found it really creepy, and turned the computer off.

Now I've taken the battery out, and don't dare to do anything...  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Does anyone have any idea where this could come from? I somehow have the feeling that it might have something to do with overheating...

I will try to provide more specific information, if necessary.
Thank you for your time!
