I'm using on one of my systems Avast 5 beta, which I'm starting to really like
But because it's beta, I don't suggest that you use it as of yet, the final version may not come out till mid November or later

I also was testing Microsoft Securtiy Essential
It proved to be good at removing some malware I had purposely installed
Do you want to give it a try?
You can check out it's options after installation
I don't have it installed now, but I liked it, and would like some more feedback
I'm not positive of your exact computer specs.
But this is the minimum requirements

Quote
Operating System: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7

    * For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 256 MB RAM or higher.
    * For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 1.0 GHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher.
    * VGA display of 800 × 600 or higher.
    * 140 MB of available hard disk space.
    * An Internet connection is required for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials.
    * Internet Browser:
o Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
o Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later.
    * Microsoft Security Essentials also supports Windows XP Mode in Windows 7. For more information see the system requirements for Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

Here is a download link if you would like to try it
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Take note: This AV has the following protection
Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
So during installation, the installer should disable Windows Defender realtime protection so there won't be a conflict
Let me know if you are going to give it a try
If so, I would like to see a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards, just to ensure what is and isn't running

Thanks for the new log
Try using MSE for a few days and let me know what you think about it please

From memory, because I don't have it installed anymore
Updating, I believe it will update with Microsoft Automatic Updates
but you can manually update
If you check out it's options, I believe it is set to Quick Scan daily and check for updates before scanning
I changed that option, but you do what you prefer
Quick Scan, I think took about 20 minutes, not sure
A full scan, I recommend at least once month took about 1 and half hours

One note: If you are installing any big programs and don't want no interference from MSE's realtime protections during install
Eg.. Updating Video Drivers, Service Pack 2 for Windows, etc...
Right click it's icon by the clock and select OPEN
Under Settings I think you will find Realtime protection, Uncheck the Realtime protection and click SAVE
NOTE: It's always a good idea to Right click on a file and scan with MSE before running the file if your  going to disable protection before installation, does that make sense  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
