Failure Windows XP Automatic Update

Early this morning my wife's computer (Windows XP Multimedia Edition) was updated automatically by Microsoft and re-booted.  However, it hung at the signon screen.  She had to power off the machine and re-boot.  Then when it came up, there were a couple of error messages (one from NovaStor Backup and another from Dell) about not starting.  The toolbar at the bottom was missing.  I restored this, but there was no network (Network connections was empty).  When viewing the computer hardware, and attempting to look at the properties of the NIC card, no properties would come up (no properties of any hardware device would be displayed).  This computer has McAfee on it, but the McAfee problem was supposed to be for commercial accounts (which this is not).  Also the properties for the System Services will not come up.

The problem with hanging at signon occurred last week, and I was able to restore to a previous System Restore and get working.  However, now when I try to boot in Safe Mode and use System Restore, I get a message about "System Restore is unable to protect this computer".  

A friend recommend this site as being very helpful for him in the past.  Can you help?

After looking at the HiJackThis output, I realized that the svchost.exe file was missing.  I copied this file from another Windows XP system and was then able to perform System Restore to go back to an earlier level.  Once I got the system back up, I then was able to go to McAfee's site and they described this problem (although their solution was to copy the file from the dllcache which McAfee had removed, also).

Anyway, problem solved.

Thanks for letting me know, you do have some orphan entries in your hijackthis log that we can remove
If you would like to clean those, can you do the following please

Run a Fresh Scan and save logfile with Hijackthis and post the new log

In addition:
Please supply an uninstall list from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents
