im going to write a unix script that will monitor bandwidth over a set period of times a day, week, or even a
month. Using what commands is the ?
any help at all on how to tackle this is most appreciated.

I believe it's called MRTG or something to that effect.

Yeh but that is not a script...from what i see its
Multi Route Traffic Grabber
it's a app of some sort
this would have to be something just very basic..that would just check the bandwidth usage and log it
very very very basic...im going to figure it out tommorrow..any more ideas would be again apreciated.
