As a test, can you boot from a disquette? If so, chances are it can't be your drive, your cable or the IDE floppy port. If you can't boot from a floppy, then you will know that WinXP isn't the culprit. Change the cable, you did say you haven't tried it and it will take only a little time to test. If it still doesn't boot, try a known good floppy drive. And IF it STILL doesn't work, then the IDE floppy port is the most likely culprit. It could also be a BIOS setting, but then I 'm sure you checked those already...
