how do you recover data from hard drive???
« on: February 25, 2003, 06:24:57 PM »
i have 2 os on my computer. win2k on c drive and win server on d drive. i formatted c and reinstall 2k. when i try to go into d where my window server is, it tells me i am missing a file and i need to reinstall \"system32 ntoskrnl.exe.\" and it would not load up windows server until i reinstall that file. does anyone know where i can find that file???

   and when i go into in c: drive where win2k is i do not see anything in d drive where window server is. i also check in dos to see if there is any files it says no file in d drive. c drive is in ntsf format. d is in fat32 format. i only formatted c drive.
could i have lost all my data in d drive??? i did not format d drive at all. does anybody know how to recover my data in d drive???

You don't mention if you were dual booting, on C drive root there is a file "boot.ini" it show something like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect

maybe you are missing the reference to boot Windows server, the above is for the hard drive partitioned in two.
It may be different for the two hard drives.
