Modifying boot screens

I have followed the directions and used the utility to make my own boot screen. I went with a white background and text. I just change images 1 and ten. When I finished it and rebooted from safemode I get a solid black screen and the blue progress bar only. Why is this where is my bmp images?

It is not 16bit is this the reason? I see the others and there is no way they are only 16bit color. arghhh
